Biblical Studies BA

Columbia's Biblical Studies Program has recently gone through some exciting revisions. Students who intend to stay for the full four year BA program now have the opportunity to select an "Emphasis" that fits their abilities and interests.

Biblical Studies BA--Church Ministry Emphasis

For students who want to do significant foundational building in biblical studies and want to apply this to ministry within the church--either in the areas of adult or youth ministries--this is the program for you. Students will spend a significant part of their program on the biblical foundation but they will have opportunity to put this together with a variety of very practical courses relating to these ministry settings. In addition, students will spend their internship time working in a church related setting gaining valuable experience.

Biblical Studies BA--Community Development Emphasis

For students who want to do significant foundational building in biblical studies and want to apply this to service--a more common word for "ministry"--outside the doors of the church, this is the program for you. Students will spend a significant part of their program on the biblical foundation but they will have the opportunity to put this together with a variety of very practical courses relating to these community settings. This emphasis is for students who would love to stand on their biblical foundation and "move the world" towards greater justice, compassion, and peace (in the biblical senses of these words). Students may be interested in working with church based organizations locally or internationally and will spend their internship time in these sorts of settings.

Biblical Studies BA--Teaching Emphasis

For students who are particularly keen in biblical studies and have a desire to communicate and facilitate learning in others, this is the emphasis for you! Students here will have the opportunity to go deeper than is required in others emphases and thus will take courses in Biblical Hebrew and Greek as well as travel to Israel for a three week intensive biblical geography course hosted by the well-renowned Jerusalem University College. Students in this emphasis will also be involved in a teaching internship which will provide them with opportunity to learn teaching skills like setting objectives, lesson planning, classroom management, evaluation, and so on. Often students from this emphasis expect to pursue graduate studies not long after their time at Columbia.
