Summer Service Practicum Assignments
Questions Contact the service practicum office
DUE DATE: All summer SP assignments and the Supervisor Evaluation are due on or before Friday, August 22nd, 2008 (unless other arrangements have been made with the Service Learning Associate)
Reflection Assignment (25%) At the end of your service time, write a reflection paper (2.5 pages per credit hour) on your service assignment. Reflect on the experience: What happened, what were you involved in and how did it go (the good things and the bad). Discuss the things you learned about yourself, others and service as a Christian. How did you do in carrying out your responsibilities – what were the challenges and what were the rewards? Look back over your goals you set for yourself. Did you achieve them? Why or why not? What values did you learn through those you served? What did you learn about service? How did God answer prayer requests you had concerning your assignment? Conclude with something that impacted your life through this assignment. If you are using two different placements, please complete 2 separate 4-page reflections.
Deeper Learning Assignment: (25%)
- For SP II - Out-Look Assignment (4-5 Pages): You are coming to the end of your first year of Service Practicum. For some of you this will be the end of your time with CBC. For others, this is only the beginning of your two or even four year Columbia Bible College career. In this three part assignment you have the opportunity to get a little bit creative and look at the grand picture of service from a biblical, personal, and future perspective. Part 1: Biblical Out-Look (1.5 pages)
+ Find 2 or 3 biblical passages that have relevance to service + What do these passages say by themselves (keep this part brief) + What major theme(s) can you draw together from these passages? What is the grand picture? Part 2: Personal Out-Look (1.5pages) + How do these passages resonate with you personally? Do you feel passionate when you read them? Do they make you feel helpless, as if the task and responsibility is too great? Do they affirm your life mission? + Organization: How does your service practicum placement (church or non-church related organization) fit into this picture? How does your role, within your SP placement, fit into this picture?Part 3: Future Out-Look (1 page) +Outside of Service Practicum and CBC, how are you going to continue to address this grand picture? This section could take the form of goal setting, a four year plan, or something creative. Strong papers will tie this section together with the previous two parts.
- Fpr SP III - Book Response: Choose one of the books from the Book List below which applies to your program of study. Complete a 3-page personal reflection on the book. Include a paragraph reflecting on how the book helped you during your summer Service Practicum placement.
- For SP IV - Service Reflection: Write a 3-page paper about what God has shown you about service through your Service Practicum and other service experiences (including all 4 SP's). Discuss the significance and values of biblical servanthood, what you have learned about yourself and two ways you have been able to apply classroom learning to your service experiences. How will these experiences help share future volunteer and career decisions for you? Finally, share some thoughts on Service Practicum, what was helpful, what wasn't? If you could change something, how would you change it to meet your needs and provide practical education? Please include photos of your experiences, if possible, to be used in future Service Learning newsletters and slide shows.
Supervisor Evaluation (including attendance 50%)
- The supervisor must complete the Agreement Form online before placement can be approved.
