Summer Service Practicum Qualifications

  1. Application must take place in March or April before service placement begins.

  2. Service must take place after application within the months of May-August.

  3. At least 40 hrs of experience is required per credit hour, up to a maximum of two credits. (A maximum of 40 hours per week is calculated, even if you are working above and beyond that number)

  4. Student may receive bursaries, scholarships, room and board, salary or other payment for summer work with the following understanding: If a student is receiving a salary or hourly wage, they must volunteer at least 40 hours/credit (over the course of the summer) more than their weekly requirement by the employer (i.e. If a student is paid for a regular workweek of 40 hrs, only hours over that can be used for service practicum credit).

  5. If you are applying to complete SP III and/or SP IV: Because your placement must apply to your program of study, you must obtain verbal approval from your department head concerning your placement choice.

  6. An actively involved supervisor must be available to oversee the experience and verify the information. This supervisor will also be responsible to evaluate the student.

  7. The Service Learning Director must approve application before the student can begin their service assignment.

  8. The student must register and pay for the specific service practicum credit(s) before beginning their placement.

Please note: Summer Service practicum is designed/intended for students needing to "catch up" with their service practicum credits, not for those wishing to work ahead. If you have questions about this, please talk with the Experiential Learning Associate or the Director of Service Learning.
