October 2007
Hello Alumni!
Remember the rain? Well it's arrived and the students are starting to feel the crunch of homework as we approach mid-terms. It's hard to believe that September is already gone and we're getting into the routine of the school year. In this season of Thanksgiving, we give thanks for a great start to the school year!
Here's what's happening...
CBC & ALUMNI RELATIONS NEWS
Alumni Bearcat Day
A great day of CBC athletics, past & present on September 29, 2007. A number of Bearcat Alumni came out to participate in the day's games, some were even from out of province! Many non-"Bearcat" Alumni also came out to watch the games and join the BBQ. Hope to see you there next year! What to know what happened? Read an article about the day: http://www.columbiabc.edu/?action=d7_article_display&Join_ID=172212&template=athletics_articles.htm7
CBC's First Urban Mission Adventure of the Year!
I want to say THANK YOU for your prayers this weekend as we embarked upon the first UMA of the year. I know that I felt the power of prayer this weekend, and it was encouraging to know that there were many people “back home” who had us in heart and mind. Let me first of all say a huge thank you and recognize my amazing team of leaders: .Loretta Krueger (staff) & Steve Kim (student), Elise Hartin (staff) & Brian Dean (student), Landon (staff) & Lindsay (student) Hildebrand, Matt Wall (alumni) & Carrie Wall (student), and Emily Hodgson (student) - my amazing right-hand for the weekend. It was a little nerve-wracking walking into this experience, knowing that Bryan Born wouldn’t be there, but this team of leaders, along with an amazing group of students (who may have not wanted to go on the trip, but never showed it!), made for a very smooth experience. It was great to see how each leader’s gifts complimented those of another. My favourite part each day was meeting the students after an activity – working with a certain organization, or simply having walked the streets, meeting people – I was privileged to hear their stories and witness their excitement, disappointment, enthusiasm, and sometimes even discouragement or anger at realizing that people living with poverty, addiction and pain is contradictory to God’s hope and life for us. I encourage you to ask the students their stories. Now the real test comes in the next few weeks; I have encouraged the students to let this experience change them. They can no longer claim ignorance for what they have seen, heard, and felt, and I am excited to see the results in their own lives. This is, after all, why we do UMA in the first place! In just over four weeks, the next group will be on the Bakerview bus, heading back to the Ivanhoe for another weekend of UMA! ~ Kathleen Doll, Intercultural Studies Assistant & UMA Coordinator
Please pray for our students & the student/staff/alumni leaders as the embark on this amazing opportunity & service experience in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside. There are 4 UMA trips each year and we love to have alumni involved! The next trip happens November 1-4. If you have questions about UMA or are interested in being involved in future Urban Mission Adventures as a group leader or help in another way, please contact Kathleen Doll at ICS.Assistant@columbiabc.edu or phone 604-853-3567 ext. 443.
Join the Alumni Committee
Join the alumni committee! We would like to form an alumni committee to help plan events and provide services for alumni. We are specifically looking for members from the 80's, 60's & 40s/50's. If you would like to be a part of this committee or know of someone who would, please contact Adel at 604-853-3567 ext. 327 or email alumni@columbiabc.edu.
The Great Alumni Search
Many people have submitted alumni update forms and our email and white pages lists are growing daily, but there are many people we still have lost touch with and you can help! People move or change their name and we lose track of them so we are continuously searching for alumni. You are our greatest resource as many of you have stayed in touch with classmates, friends, relatives, or even people you attend church with or work with. You know information that we don't! Check with fellow alumni to see if they are receiving mail from us, if not, we would appreciate information to point us in the right direction or your connection with that person to encourage them to contact us and update their information. The best is to direct them to the website to fill out an alumni update form found at www.columbiabc.edu/alumni!
Alumni Testimonies
Alumni stories are a key to our recruitment process and help people to catch the vision for Columbia. We want to know how your using your Columbia education, whether it's through employment, personal growth or volunteer service in the community. Many prospective students want to know what you can do with a Columbia education and your testimony helps us answer that question. So, send us a short testimony about your time at CBC, what you learned and how you're using that education today. You can send all testimonies to admissions@columbiabc.edu.
