A Special Thank You to ‘80/’81 Alumni
"I am looking to thank Alumni from 1980 who came out to Deroche Elementary and offered a Bible Study to it's students at Deroche Hall on Tuesdays and in 1981 Thursdays. We were all put in age categories, given a teacher and a Bible. We participated in play time, worship time (my personal favourite) and Bible teaching. It was here that I received Christ and have followed him ever since. I have avoided the pitfalls of my family such as alcoholism, drugs, smoking and bad relationships because of God in my life. Without CBC students I never would have met my saviour. I want to thank all those who participated in bring the gospel to Deroche." - Heather Waycott

Irene [Huebert] Geng ('69-'70)
Irene and her husband, Eric live in Chilliwack, BC. Irene writes, "My reason for attending Bible college in 1969-70, was to prepare myself to face university. I had heard many people talk about young people losing their faith when they left home for university, and I didn't want that to happen to me. Also, I was terrified at the thought of heading to an unknown university campus. I really wasn't ready to handle that on my own. So MBBI was a safe place for me to experience independence for the first time.Living in residence was a tremendously worthwhile experience. Because of the severe acne that scarred my face as a teenager, I lacked self-confidence and that affected every aspect of my life. Living with my dorm mates opened my eyes to new possibilities, taught me new skills, broadened my social horizons, and taught me much about having fun...important lessons for a shy, insecure young lady. My classes were valuable. I learned that answers and solid evidence abound for the questions people ask about Christianity. So, if challenged or if I had a question myself, I knew that I could find a response that would substantiate my faith. That knowledge was an important foundation as I embarked upon adulthood. My childhood Sunday School experience was affirmed. One of the experiences that stands out for me was that I participated in the student drama featuring excerpts from Shakespeare's plays. I was cast in the role of Juliet's nurse in the scene we performed from Romeo and Juliet. We had a great drama night that fall and later in the year MBBI hosted a weekend for high school students considering attending MBBI. On that weekend, we repeated the Shakespeare drama and I distinctly remember waiting back stage, feeling the atmosphere was positively electric! I just knew that this was going to be a fabulous performance and I could hardly wait to get on stage. As soon as I waddled out on stage, costumed as a fat lady in a plain brown dress with a black shawl over her head, the audience started to laugh. Thereafter, every move I made, every word I said had them laughing. They laughed and laughed and laughed. To my utter amazement, my performance brought the house down. For that one night, I was the star of the show. That drama experience gave me some recognition on campus, boosted my self-esteem, and broadened my social circle. My year at Mennonite Brethren Bible Institute was a tremendously worthwhile building block in my preparation for adulthood. I benefited academically and spiritually from the classes and I benefited as a whole person. I knew I had made a wise decision by setting aside that year for that purpose. For me, MBBI was an important next step in becoming an adult." - September 2007

Gina Unger ['89-'90]*
Gina Unger (1989-1990) and Jeff McMillan would like to announce the birth of their son, Hayes Unger McMillan, born at home, March 1, 2006 (9 lbs; 22 inches). He is named after the Hayes River upon which Gina and Jeff canoed in July 2005. Just 3 days prior to the expected journey's end, the 600km canoe trip came to a halt in the form of a search and rescue mission after their canoe was demolished in a set of rapids leaving them stranded on an island for 17 days. (Upon being rescued, the pregnancy was then announced to family and friends.) The adventure was a life-changing experience and one of spiritual growth for them and, also, how Hayes received his name!

In Loving Memory of Mike Spencer ('92-'94)
Michael Elliott Spencer May 4, 1974 - September 9, 2007 Our much-loved son Mike died instantly in a tragic car crash September 9 on the outskirts of Salmon Arm. The interment and funeral service took place September 12 in Sorrento.
Born in Vancouver, Mike was raised from the age of six on a rural acreage in Blewett, near Nelson. A happy and healthy child, he grew up loving the outdoors and skiing, exploring, and riding dirt bike in the mountains above his home. In High School it became apparent that he was a talented athlete.
Mike graduated from High School in 1992, leaving Nelson to spend two years at Columbia Bible College in Abbotsford where he developed a better understanding of his faith - and met his future wife Colleen Pauls. They were married at Valleyview Bible Church (MB) in Kamloops by Colleen's Dad Reuben Pauls October 8, 1994. While living in Kamloops they were blessed with two children.
Mike worked for a while in a sawmill north of Kamloops, then in 1998 began the Welding Level C - welder/fitter program at the University College of the Cariboo in Kamloops. The family moved to Sumas Prairie in Abbotsford, where Mike refined his special skills in welding aluminum at Magnum Trailers on River Road. Developing into a skilled, creative master craftsman he was hired as a lead hand welding fabricator at Valid Manufacturing in Salmon Arm, interpreting engineer's drawings to direct the building and modification of large specialty vehicles. They bought their first house in nearby Sorrento which needed extensive renovations; he loved having their own home and working on it.
Mike was a sensitive, reserved, big man who trusted others, had no enemies, thought the best of people, and never asked for much. He enjoyed sports and the outdoors, always restless unless he was doing something. He was happiest when playing with his children.
Mike was predeceased by his grandparents Henry and Kathleen Spencer of Duncan, and Corny and Helene Driediger of Abbotsford.
Mike leaves to mourn his wife Colleen, son Justin (10) and daughter Kara (8) of Sorrento; sister Jen (Jarrett) Wilke of Cobble Hill; brother Steve (Jeanette) of Winnipeg; parents Tim and Louise (Driediger) Spencer of Nelson; uncles, aunts, cousins, nephews, and nieces; and many friends.
Mike's sister Jen attended CBC 1990-1991. She went on to take an Occupational Therapy degree at UBC; while living at Carey Hall there she met Jarrett Wilke. They were married at St. John's Anglican (Shaughnessy) August 12, 1995, and now live in Cobble Hill where she's a full-time school marm to their four children Matthais (8), Thomas (6), Hudson (4), and Jack (2). Jarrett is a math teacher at nearby Shawnigan Lake School. They attend Cobble Hill Fellowship Baptist Church.
Mike's brother Steve attended CBC 1994-1995 where he met Jeanette Friesen of Winnipeg. Mixing up his Dad's instructions, he followed her to Winnipeg instead of keeping her in BC; they were married in Springfield Heights Mennonite Church May 29, 1999. Steve has been a Constable in the Winnipeg Police Service for four years. They have two children, Liam (5) and Brycen (1), and attend Eastview Community Church (MB) in NE Winnipeg.

Melissa will be remembered for her enthusiasm of life, deep love for family and friends and her dedication and her devotion to her students. The cornerstone of Melissa's life was: "Each day, is a gift from God. A blessing in disguise. We can choose to make it good or bad. Whatever our attitude is, our day will become.
