'Cats grab 3rd
February 21, 2005
In his final game in a Bearcat uniform, Senior forward Steven Esau (Chilliwack, BC) led his team to a decisive 72-56 win over the Southwestern College Eagles, to capture 3rd place in the NCCAA West Regionals.
Overcoming a tough loss in the previous night's semi-final, the Bearcats showed great defensive determination, holding the Eagles to 32% shooting in the second half and 36% for the game.
The first half saw the teams exchange baskets with neither team able to open any sizeable lead. The 'Cats led 34-32 at the half. In the second half the 'Cats put on the pressure and held the Eagles to only 24 points, while scoring 38 of their own, enroute to the 16 point win.
The 'Cats were led by second year guard, Jon Schmidt's 18 points, and first year forward Devon Krahn's 18 rebounds. The Eagles were led by Brandon Ream, with 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Esau's career coming to an end
February 17, 2005
Steve Esau came to CBC 5 year's ago unsure about playing on the men's basketball team. Head coach Rudy Teichrob convinced Steve to play and needless to say, Esau has had a lot of success playing at Columbia. This weekend he will be playing in his final home games as a Bearcat.
Coach Rudy explains:
"Part way into his first season, it became very apparent that we needed to make a change at the point guard position and I asked Steve if he would like to try that spot. He didn't hesitate and said he would try his best. Allowing him to handle the ball a lot just increased his confidence and made him an all-around better player. Proof of this came in the off-season when his high-school buddies said that they couldn't beat him anymore in a game of 1 on 1 and the reason was because he responded the chance of handling the ball. Steve worked out in the weight room and made himself a better and stronger athlete and today he is in his 4th year of playing and one of the key leaders and components of the Bearcats team."
Says Esau: "It was a longer than expected time that gave me a great opportunity to play plenty of basketball, meet great people, and open my eyes to God and realize there is plenty more to learn."
After graduating, he hopes to get involved with prayer ministry and counseling and to eventually persue a Master's degree.
"I'll be playing in every Alumni game until until they tell me to stop."

The NCCAA West Regionals begin on Thursday at 6:00 pm.

Thriller in OT
February 4, 2005
The CBC men's basketball team hosted NCCAA West Region opponent Multnomah Bible College on Friday and won 89-80 in overtime. The win will likely position the 'Cats to get one of the top seeds for the upcoming NCCAA playoffs.
In front of about 600 fans, the Cats started strong and used their speed and quickness to get some easy baskets in the early going. Multnomah's star, Dave Carpenter, came ready to play and would not let his team get too far behind as he finished the first half with 15 points.
CBC got contributions from everyone and did a great job of rebounding, in fact they had 24 offensive rebounds in the game. The first half was fast and exciting and the Cats built a 51 - 37 half-time lead. The tempo slowed in the second half and the 'Cats scored only 24 points. This allowed Multnomah to gradually creep closer and they eventually tied the game and sent it into overtime on a big 3 point shot by Carpenter.
The 'Cats regrouped in overtime and outscored the Ambassadors 14 - 5 to take the game 89 - 80. Steve Esau had a great game with 25 points and 9 rebounds and Curtis Haugan was a terror on the boards grabbing 18 rebounds and scoring 19 points. Another very important stat was our free-throw shooting as the 'Cats shot 28/34 for 82.4% for the game.
Next up for the Bearcats are 2 games in Everett and Seattle next weekend before hosting the West Regional Playoffs on Feb. 17 - 19 at Columbia Place.
Wolves and 'Cats Collide
January 31, 2005
The men's basketball team was looking to add to its six-game winning streak this weekend by hosting the Walla Walla Wolves for two games.
The Wolves had other plans and took both games away from the 'Cats.
In the first game on Saturday, the 'Cats took a narrow 43-42 half-time lead into the second half and led for as much as 8 points midway through the final frame. The Wolves got on a late roll and took the lead with less then a minute on the clock after scoring 7 points on 2 possessions. The 'Cats shooting seemed to go cold, going 46.7% in the half to the Wolves 56.7%.
The Wolves escaped with a 85-81 win.
Jon Schmidt led the team with 21 points while Devon Krahn was 6/7 from the field and finished with 16 points. The 'Cats were outrebounded 43-34. Overall CBC shot 50% from the field and from the free throw line while the Wolves hit 68.4% from the line.
In the second game played on Sunday, the 'Cats led 29-26 at the half before the Wolves outscored the Columbia 51-28 in the second half. The shooting for the 'Cats took a turn for the worse, hitting just 32.4% in the half and 33.8% overall from the field.
The Wolves hit 62.1% from the field in the second half and went on to win 77-57.
'Cats take out Cascades
January 27, 2004
The men's basketball team put on a show at Columbia Place that kept the crowd of 600 on the edge of their seats after coming back from a 38-31 half-time deficit to defeat cross-town rival UCFV 76-70.
The Cascades, who sit in second place in the BCCAA standings with a 8-3 record and are ranked #13 in the country, bring a lot of speed, skill and physical play. The 'Cats showed a lot of character and would not be out-done and responded by taking the game to their opponents.
The 'Cats opened the second half on a 27-4 run to take a lead that they would not relinquish when the they went up 40-38. They built a ten point lead, 68-58, with three minutes to go in the game but the Casades went on a short run of their own to to get within 5 points with 52 seconds remaining. With 27 seconds on the clock and the score 73-70 for the 'Cats, Steve Klassen hit 1/2 from the free throw line to get the lead back to 4 points. The Cascades missed a 3-point attempt on their next possession and were forced to foul the 'Cats for the remainder of the game.
First-year forward Devon Krahn led all scorers with 27 points after shooting 11/12 from the field. Third-year forward Steve Klassen had 19 points. Curtis Haugan led the team with 6 boards and 3 blocked shots.
The Cascades shot 63.3% from the field in the opening frame but dropped their shooting by half in the second after shooting 34.4 %. Meanwhile the 'Cats shot 68% in the final frame compared to 42.4% in the first half and finished the game 53.4% from the field.
The win makes it six wins in a row for the Bearcats. They will look to keep the streak alive when they play Walla Walla on Saturday at 8:00 pm and on Sunday at 2:00 pm.
Winning streak extended to 5 games
January 24, 2005
The CBC men's basketball team had a successful road trip this past weekend with wins over Multnomah and Eugene Bible College.
The 'Cats opened their road swing on Friday, Jan.21 with a stop in Portland, OR to play the Multnmah Bible College Ambassadors. The Ambassadors jumped out in front early but the Bearcats kept coming back and at the half were behind 34 - 33. The 'Cats started the second half with a set play that worked to perfection that gave the visiting team the lead that they would not relinquished. Columbia built a lead to 9 points a one time only to see Multnomah hit a couple of treys to bring it close, but in the end the Cats won 72 - 69.
"Being a regional opponent, this was a big win for us and we do play them again in a critical game on Feb. 4 at Columbia Place", commented head coach Rudy Teichrob. In spite of starting guard Jon Schmidt and forward Curtis Haugan not feeling great, Steve Klassen played a great game with 24 points and 6 rebounds and was player of the game. Jon Schmidt had 13 points and Steve Esau scored 11.
The next night the 'Cats travelled to Eugene, Oregon to take on Eugene Bible College, a tough place to play in the second game of a road trip. The team would not be denied this night and walked away with a convincing 107 - 62 victory, the teams 5th straight win on the road. Everyone contributed on the scoresheet in this game and player of the game was Curtis Haugan who had 19 points, 17 rebounds, 6 steals and 2 blocked shots and just brought a lot of energy to the team. Steve Klassen finished the game with 23 points, Nick Derksen with 17 and Devon Krahn with 15.
Next up for the Bearcats is a game you don't want to miss as they host their cross-town rivals, UCFV, on Thursday at Columbia Place at 8:00 PM. This weekend both the men and women host Walla Walla College on Saturday at 6 & 8pm and on Sunday afternoon at 12 & 2 pm.
'Cats Win Kwantlen Tourney
January 10, 2005
The men's basketball team won all three games at the Kwantlen Tournament this past weekend to win the Championship.
From one weekend to the next things have changed dramatically for the men's basketball team. After going winless (0-3) the weekend before, the 'Cats have put together a three game winning streak with wins over Capilano College, Langara College and Kwantlen University College.
"With the changes to the lineup over various issues, it caused the team to take a hard look at who we are, our character and how do we respond and move forward from here", noted head coach Rudy Teichrob.
"The team was just amazing this weekend and played great basketball. The key was each player doing a personal self evaluation of their past performance and how do they want to finish the year and they all agreed that it begins with hard work. We worked hard this weekend and when someone had to step it up, they did as did the whole team."
In their first game against Capilano, both teams came out firing and the half -time score of 49 - 46 indicated the same. The 'Cats started out trailing early 7 - 3 but then went on a 19 - 5 run and never trailed again. In the second half the defence limited Capilano to just 26 points while the 'Cats scored 36 to take the win 85 - 72. Columbia outrebounded the Blues 44 - 31 with Curtis Haugan grabbing 14 and Devon Krahn 11. Jon Schmidt led the team with 22 points and Steve Esau added 21.
The 'Cats followed with a very exciting contest against the Langara Falcons that had a fantastic finish in overtime. Langara took the early lead and built a 10 point lead early and it stayed that way with both teams exchanging baskets and at the half it was 43 - 33 for the Falcons. The 'Cats would cut the lead down to 5 points midway through the half before CBC finally cut into that lead and tied the game at 69, only to have Langara hit a trey to take a 72 - 69 lead and with the clock running out. Jon Schmidt hit a big trey of his own to send the game into overtime tied at 72. CBC scored first in overtime and took their first lead of the game on a pair of free-throws to go ahead 74 - 72. From there they built the lead to 80 - 77 when Langara hit a 3 point shot with 14 seconds left. As the clock was running down Jon Schmidt put up a shot that dropped as the buzzer went to give the Cats the win 82 - 80. Schmidt once again led the team with 22 points followed by Curtis Haugan with 17 as well as 15 rebounds, and Steve Klassen and Devon Krahn each had 15 points. It was a real gutsy effort by the Cats considering they were down to 7 players as Steve Esau left the game early with an ankle injury.
In their final game against Kwantlen, the team started slowly as the fatigue factor from the previous night but towards the end of the first half the team seemed to find a little energy and at half-time held a 32 - 27 lead. They maintained their lead for the rest of the game and eventually won 70 - 62 and took home the championship trophy. Jon Schmidt led the team with 26 points followed by Steve Klassen with 15 and also dished out 5 assists .
"This weeked was a real character builder for the team and they showed that a lot of hard work can accomplish much and every player stepped it up when the opportunity presented itself" commented Teichrob.
Steve Klassen was selected a tournament allstar and Jon Schmidt was the tournament MVP.
The Bearcats now have the next weekend of and begin preparation for a trip to Oregon on the weekend of January 21 for a couple of games in Portland and Eugene before coming back home for a big game against UCFV on January 27.

Second year guard Jon Schmidt led the team with 17 points and 6 assists while Greg Neufeld chipped in 13. Curtis Haughan continued his impressive play with 12 points and 7 rebounds and Nate Tiessen had one of his strongest games of the year with 12 points.. Overall, the 'Cats shot 31.9% from the field.

BIG win over Walla Walla Wolves
November 29, 2004
The CBC men's basketball team ended a successful road trip after downing the Wolves 72-69 on Sunday.
The game started out very slowly offensively with score 11-11 ten minutes into the game. Before the half, Steve Klassen hit a trey and that seem to spark the team, he than caught fire and hit two more and created some easy fastbreak layups and suddenly at halftime the 'Cats were up 35 – 30.
"We had found some energy on offense and once we had the lead, we never gave it up", commented head coach Rudy Teichrob. At one point in the second the 'Cats built a 12 point lead, but despite a late charge by the Wolves the 'Cats hanged on for 72 – 69 win.
Jon Schmidt led the team with 20 points, Steve Klassen really got things going for the 'Cats and he finished with 17, and Greg Neufeld found his stroke again hitting 4 treys and finished with 14. The team also played good defence, contesting most of Wolves shots as they shot a horrible 4/31 from downtown.
This week the 'Cats travel across town to take on rivals UCFV Cascade on Friday December 3 at 8 pm.

'Cats overtaken by NAIA Eagles
November 9, 2004
The CBC men's basketball team trailed 46-49 to the Northwest College Eagles at the half but lost 73-87.
The Eagles, from Kirkland Washington, showed why they are one of the top teams in the NAIA Div.II after an impressive game against the 'Cats.
The Bearcats got the start they wanted and opened an 11-4 lead in the first 4 minutes. They continued to lead for most of the first half and led 26-16 midway through the opening frame. The Eagles began to close the gap in the next few minutes until finally tying the 'Cats at 33-33 with 6:10 to go.
In the first 8 minutes of the second half, both teams exchanged leads. With the score 60-57 for the Eagles and 12:15 remaining, the Eagles outscored the Bearcats 22-9 in the next 10 minutes of play and built a substantial lead to cruise to the victory. Respectable result against Spartans
October 31, 2004
The CBC men's basketball team showed they can compete with the best. Hosting the Trinity Western Univeristy Spartans on Saturday, the 'Cats led at the half only to lose 90-79.
The Spartans, who play in the highly competitive Canada West (CIS), had their hands full all evening against an aggressive Bearcats team. Columbia was looking to continue on their impressive play after narrowly losing to Capilano College in overtime on Wednesday.
CBC got off to a slow start and were down 8-0 early before getting in a run midway through the first half and led 44-42 at the half.
The 'Cats seemed to tire in the second half and were outscored 48-35. Second year guard Jon Schmidt led the team with 22 points (7/16 FG ) while Greg Neufeld shot 4/10 from beyond the arc and finished with 17 points. Forward Steve Esua was a force all game and tallied 10 points, 10 boards and 4 assists.

'Cats take 2 out of 3 on Island
October 25, 2004
The CBC men's basketball team had a successful road trip this past weekend.
The Bearcats team traveled to Victoria on Friday to play the Camosun Chargers. Not being able to finish some easy shots early, the Cats found themselves down 12 – 2 before they seem to find their legs and started to close the gap. Late in the half they finally gained the lead 32 – 29 and it stayed close till late in the half when Camosun scored a couple of easy baskets and went into the intermission with a 46 – 40 lead.
This was the first road trip of the season for Columbia and they just couldn’t seem to put a run together in the second half and eventually lost the game 90 – 75.
Jon Schmidt led the Cats with 16 points and Steve Klassen had 13. But overall it was nice to see at least 8 players contribute offensively and also for some, it was a learning experience.
On Saturday the 'Cats travelled to the Malaspina University College tournament and opened with a game against Kwantlen University College. The team started stronger in this game and held the lead for most of the game. Hitting their first 3 shots to take a 6 - 0 lead, Columbia kept building on this and led at halftime 43 – 29. This was one of the better defensive performances for the team in a half as they constantly stifled the Kwantlen offence. The second half started the way the first had finished and CBC built their lead to 19 points at 52 – 33.
Using all the players regularly in this game kept the teams energy level high and even though Kwantlen closed the gap, they could never catch up and the Cats went on to win 79 – 70.
Greg Neufeld and Jon Schmidt led the team with 24 and 21 points respectively and Devon Krahn and Steve Klassen each had 10. Coach Teichrob was happy for the win but wasn’t too excited about seeing a large lead dwindle late in the game but sees consistent effort and improvement and is pleased to see contributions from all his players.
Sunday morning Columbia played Malispina University College in what proved to be a very exciting game and one that was not decided until the dying seconds. The game was close from beginning to end and had 13 lead changes in it. At half time it was tied at 36 and the second half continued as the first with lead changes and a very close game. 'Cats go 1-2 in Classic
October 14, 2004
The men's basketball team hosted the Thanksgiving Classic Oct. 7-9 and finished the tournament with 1 win and 2 losses.
The Columbia Bible College Bearcats hosted their first Thanksgiving Basketball Classic on the weekend in a round robin format with the Langara College Falcons, OUC Lakers and the Golden State Baptist Bears from Santa Clara, California participating. This was the kickoff for of the basketball season for the teams and gave the coaches a chance to see how their teams will stack up this year and the work that will have to be done from here on to accomplish their ultimate season goals. On Thursday, OUC vs. Golden State got the classic underway in a high scoring affair with Golden State prevailing 111 – 92.
Then the host Bearcats took on the Langara Falcons in what turned out to be a very exciting game in which CBC held the lead throughout and had a 49 – 39 lead at the half. The start of the second half was a slow on for the hosts and committing 5 fouls in the first 1 ½ min. proved to be costly down the stretch as Langara would be shooting bonus free-throws for most of the half. However, the team did get on a roll led be Steve Klassen who hit 5 treys in a row and had 8 in the game and helped the team a increase their lead. But just as CBC had a run, so did Langara and they had the last run and eventually on a very exciting game, 88 – 86. The Bearcats were led be Steve Klassen with 33 points, Jon Schmidt and Greg Neufeld each with 16.
On Friday, Langara vs. Golden State, Langara outscored the opposition, 86 – 65.
In the second game, CBC vs. OUC, the Bearcats started quickly and never gave up the lead this time and finally won the game, 109 – 93. This was a very scrappy game and loosely played defence and the Bearcats had more firepower than OUC, with 9 players hitting the scoresheet. Freshman Devon Krahn, Curtis Haugan and Joel Ewald all contributed significantly to the teams win and are starting to feel a little more comfortable each game out. The team was led once again be Steve Klassen who had 30 points including 7 treys and continues to shoot the ball very well for the Cats, and Jon Schmidt had 19. Coach Rudy Teichrob used his entire team in this game and was reasonably pleased with what he saw and is very encouraged about the teams possibilities this season and with more game time, the freshman are going to be significant contributors to the Bearcats success.
On Saturday, Langara won their 3rd game defeating OUC 70 – 62.
In the second game the host Bearcats took on the Golden State Baptist Bears and this proved to be a very intense and fast paced game as both teams love to get up and down the floor. In this game the Cats just couldn’t seem to find their shooting touch as they had shown in their previous two games and also gave up 43 free throws to the Bears who scored 33 points from the line and in the end gave them the victory 95 – 88. Coach Teichrob likes his teams effort and hard work but says they have to get smarter on defence and cannot continue to have 4 and 5 players foul out of games – this really became the telling tale in their two close losses. It is something that can be fixed.
Next up for the Bearcats is a tournament in Nanaimo on Oct. 22 – 24 and their next home game is Oct. 27 vs. Capilano College and on Oct. 30 vs. Trinity Western University.
