Men's Basketball
14 Days in Brazil
May 14, 2007
The men's basketball team had a great experience in
Brazil as they took part in a variety of games and camps in partnership
with Athletes in Action.
Targeting the Sao Paulo region of Brazil, the team stayed at the Athletes in
Action (AIA) quarters and strategized their service work alongside the AIA
team. The team took part in 10 basketball camps that consisted of 70-100 kids
per camp.
"There was usually 2-4 hoops per gym and we had less than 10 basketballs, but
we got the kids involved with lot's of team oriented stuff," commented head
coach Mike McLaverty. "Mass defense drills and shooting were usually what we
would work on. Than we would break down into groups and have different stations
to teach some technical skills...from ball handling to lay-ups. The kids seemed
to have a lot of fun."
These camps were also a good opportunity for the players to lead.
"The guys did a really good job of communicating with the kids even though we
couldn't speak Portuguese. Several guys took turns leading the camps or
different stations and we would end up signing autographs for as long as we
could afterwards."
The team competed in seven games and came away with a 5-2 record.
"The games were very interesting. Some of the games were against younger
competition and some against older. They play by the same set of rules down
there but the game is called much differently. We had to adjust to the physical
play quickly and once we did and the guys really enjoyed playing. One of our
highlights was playing a team of 16 year olds who were the second best team in
their age category in Brazil. They were very talented...we ended up beating them
fairly convincingly but they showed a lot of talent to be so young."
The team also did some work at the AIA quarters, including putting up
some basketball hoops and cleaning up the camp.

Basketball Brazil Bound
April 18, 2007
The men's basketball team is off to Brazil for an exciting missions trip opportunity.
Working alongside Athletes in Action, the team will be taking part in a variety
of activities including basketball clinics and participating in tournaments.
Their main ministry will be to offer help to athletes and serving them through
bible studies, team chapels and day camps - where they expect to get 50-80 kids
participating. The team departs on April 24 and returns on May 7.
The team will be working in and around the Sao Paulo region, with some
ministry in Nova Odessa.

Bearcats Bronzed
March 4, 2007
The CBC men's basketball team earned a 98-75 win over Capilano
College to medal for the first time in a BCCAA Championship.
What makes the win even more significant is that the 'Cats turned around
3-15 basement record last year to a respectful 9-7 record this year and place in
the top three at provincials.
"I'm really proud of how the team came together this year," commented head
coach Mike McLaverty, his first at the helm. "We have a lot of character guys
who wanted to prove something this year and we did."
The 'Cats balanced attack was a key for them all year and it proved worthy
again in the bronze medal game. Four players reached double figures in scoring,
led by tournament all-star Kyle Boon, who finished the game with 23 points.
Devon Krahn had 18 points while Paul Schmitke chipped in with 16. Fourth year
forward Steve Klassen, who played his final game as a Bearcat, finished the game
with 13 points.
Douglas College, ranked #1 in the nation all year, defeated Okanagan 73-30 in
the final to win gold.
Into the Playoffs
Feb. 19, 2007
With a weekend split against the visiting Malaspina Mariners, the
'Cats enter the Provincial Championships as the #4 seed and will take
on #5 Camosun in the quarterfinals.
CBC opened the weekend with a thrilling 84-79 overtime victory against
Malaspina. Both teams were deadlocked at 37 at the half and 67 at the end of
regulation before CBC outscored the Mariners 17-12 in the extra
frame.
First year guard Matt Mills (Abbotsford) went 5/8 from beyond the
arc to lead his team with 21 points. Fourth year forward Steve Klassen (Sardis)
had 18 points, while Joel Bron chipped in with 14. CBC shot 47.9% from the
field to the Mariners 43.2%.
A similar even played game was taking
place on Saturday until a third quarter lapse by the 'Cats. The Mariners
outscored CBC 18-8, propelling them to win 84-76. Klassen, who was playing in
his final regular season home game, led the team with 19 points; third year
forward Devon Krahn (Abbotsford) had 18 and 8 rebounds.
The 'Cats finish
with a 9-7 league record and qualify for provincials for the first time. They
open the tournament on Thursday March 1 at 8:00 pm against the Chargers. The
Mariners finish at 10-6.
Klassen to leads 'Cats against Mal
Feb. 15, 2007
Fourth-year graduating athlete Steve Klassen of the men's basketball
team will be playing in his final regular season games this weekend
against Malaspina.
Saturday’s game will feature a special tribute to graduating forward Steve Klassen. Here are what his current coaches had to say
about him:
Steve
has shown great leadership on the team both on the court and off and has shown
growth spiritually. His playing abilities have been recognized by others also
as he was selected as NCCAA West Regional All-star for 2 years. Now in his
final year, he once again leads the team into the playoffs for the first time in
the BCCAA at home and he wants nothing else but the team to be successful and
have a great run in the playoffs. CBC has been privileged to have had Steve as
a student and as an athlete, and when he first came it was strictly to play
basketball and now he graduates with a degree….how things change. Good job
Steve and congratulations.
– Rudy Teichrob (coached Steve 2002-2005)
Steve has been a great leader for
our team this year. As a fourth year
player Steve has done everything you could ask for; he understands that his role
on the team changes every night because of his ability to play so many positions
and he accepts that and does a great job. It will be very difficult finding
someone like Steve again. He will certainly be missed next
season. – Mike McLaverty
Catch the 'Cats in action when the
play against Malaspina on Friday at 8 pm and Saturday at 1 pm.
Back on Track
Feb. 3, 2007
The men's basketball team virtually clinched a playoff berth with two wins over the Langara Falcons.
The 'Cats defeated the Falcons 80-74 on Friday and followed that up with a
dramatic 72-71 win on Saturday. Steve Klassen (4th yr., Sardis) made two free
throws with 16 seconds remaining to give the 'Cats their first lead of the
half. He then blocked a three point attempt by the Falcons with 4 seconds
remaining, but the ball went to the Langara guard whose layup at the buzzer
went in and out.
Klassen finished with 15 points while Kyle Boon (2nd
yr., Sumas) also had 15.
With the win the 'Cats temporarily jump into
second place with a 8-6 record. They have a bye February 9-10 and will finish
their league schedule at home against Malaspina February 16-17.
CBC will
be hosting the BCCAA Basketball Provincials March 1-3.
Offensive Foul
Jan. 27, 2007
The men's
basketball team nearly came back from a 38-20 halftime deficit by
scoring 69 points in the final frame, only to lose 95-89 to the
visiting UBC Okanagan Lakers.
The #13 nationally ranked 'Cats were looking for some redemption after Friday's
73-67 loss to the Lakers. It was a rough start for CBC as dug themselves into
a hole as they managed only 8 points to the Lakers 22 in the first quarter and
shot 18% from the field in the opening half.
The offensive valve was released wide open in the final two quarters as the
'Cats outscored the Lakers 69-57, but the gap could not be closed. Even though
the CBC improved upon their shooting percentage (58.5%), the Lakers kept the
pace by shooting 63.6% in the half and 58.5% overall.
The bright spot for CBC was their young guns. First year guard Matt Mills
was 5/10 from beyond the arc to finish with a team high 23 points. Fellow
rookie Paul Schmitke had 20 points, while second year guard Kyle Boon also had
20 points. Okanagan outrebounded CBC 44-36.
CBC will be looking to get back on track when they travel to play Langara
College February 2-3.

to win 99-65.
Columbia kept up the pace on Saturday and continued to
pressure the Eagles into turnovers. With a 42-30 lead at the half, the 'Cats
went on to win 91-68.
Joel Bron (2nd yr. Surrey) led the team with 23
points and 11 rebounds. First year forward Paul Schmitke had 16 points, while

CBC opened the exhibition tournament with a 95-81 loss to Capilano College. The
next day they lost 89-86 to the Kwantlen Eagles before finishing the tournament
with a 94-91 loss to Langara College.
"In our last two games we had
opportunities to close out the game but our defence wasn't as solid as we need,"
commented second year forward Joel Bron. "Hopefully this is a wake-up call for
us."
The CBC basketball teams resume league play January 12 & 13 in
Victoria against the Camosun College Chargers. The men (3-3) will have their
work cut-out for them against the Chargers (4-3) as both teams look to secure a

Mills & Zonneveld combine for 40
Nov. 25, 2006
The men's basketball team used their up-tempo style to defeat
the visiting Puget Sound Anchorman in exhibition play 100-76.
First-year guard Matt Mills, who has been hampered with a sprained ankle from
the preseason, proved tonight that he is fully recovered after torching the
Anchorman with 20 points and 5 assists. CBC had five players reach
double-digits in scoring, including 6'6" forward Kevin Zonneveld (2nd
yr., Victoria), who had his best outing as a Bearcat when he recorded 20 points
and 9 rebounds. Joel Bron (2nd yr. Surrey) had 16 points and 14 rebounds while
4th year veteran Steve Klassen (Sardis) chipped in with 11 points and 7 boards;
Kyle Boon finished with 10 points.
The 'Cats outscored the Anchorman 50-32 in the opening half and continued to
run their opposition into the court. CBC shot 52.2% from the field to the
Anchorman's 34.6%. Columbia also out-rebounded their opponent 58-36.
The win improves the 'Cats record to 7-7 overall.

Full Throttle
Nov. 18, 2006
The men's basketball team used their quick transition game and size
advantage to win back-to-back games against the visiting Capilano Blues
November 17-18.
Columbia used their run'n gun style on Friday for a convincing 110-94 win. The
'Cats led 67-48 at the half and continued to cruise for their second league win
of the season.
In Saturday's game, the 'Cats came out flat and the Blues took full advantage
to build a comfortable 48-33 lead at the half. CBC came out storming in the
second half and outscored the Blues 50-35. CBC took the lead with about 6
minutes remaining but the Blues would not back down. First year forward Paul
Schmitke (Abbotsford) put the 'Cats ahead 83-81 with a few seconds on the clock
but Capilano tied the game to send it to overtime.
In overtime, the veteran players took over. Steve Klassen (4th yr, Sardis)
hit a three to give CBC a 86-85 lead while Devon Krahn (3rd yr., Abbotsford)
used his size down low to score 6 points in the extra frame as CBC won their
second consecutive game 98-95.
Klassen was the leading scorer with 20 points and 8 rebounds while Matt Mills
(1st yr. Abbotsford) and Krahn had 17 points each; Schmitke and Steve Taekema
(Victoria) chipped in with 12 points. Jean-Paul Kamand led the Blues with 37
points.
The win improves the 'Cats league record to 3-3 going into the Christmas
break.
Up Against the Best
Nov. 14, 2006
The men's basketball had their work cut-out for them this past
weekend when they took on the #2 nationally ranked Douglas College
Royals.
The 'Cats started strong in Friday's game and built a 9-0 lead. The experienced
Douglas squad fought back and led 47-41 at the half. The third quarter was
much the same but Douglas outscored the 'Cats by four points in the quarter to
take a 10-point lead going into the final frame. That's when the depth of the
Royals took over. Despite a great effort by CBC, the Royals were able to
sustain their momentum to win 93-74.
Devon Krahn (3rd yr., Abbotsford) led the team with 16 points and 6 boards
and while Steve Klassen (4th yr., Sardis) and Kyle Boon (2nd yr. Sumas) finished
with 13 points each.
In Saturday's contest, the Royals came out firing and led 30-13. Once CBC
began to settle they started to execute their offense and only trailed by 40-38
at the half. In the third quarter the 'Cats had trouble hitting their shots and
trailed the Royals by 10 points going into the fourth quarter. In the fourth CBC
cut the lead to withing four points but that's as close as they would come as
Douglas won 77-64.
Devon Krahn and Steve Klassen each had 13 points while Joel Bron (2nd yr.,
Surrey) had 10 points and 9 rebounds.
The 'Cats have their home opener this weekend, November 17-18 against
Capilano College. Game time is 8:00 pm.
'Cats need OT to beat Timberwolves
Nov. 6, 2006
Devon Krahn hit a game tying 3-pointer with one second on the clock
to force overtime where the 'Cats prevailed 106-100 against UNBC.
Saturday's win brought the 'Cats record to even in league play (1-1) after a
tough 85-80 loss in Friday's game.
In that game, CBC trailed as much as 14 in the second half but had a chance
to tie the game with under two minutes remaining. In the end CBC had to foul
letting UNBC hit free throws to end the game.
Kyle Boon (2nd yr. Sumas) was the leading scorer with 26 points and 12
rebounds.
The 'Cats regrouped after Friday's loss and played a complete game on
Saturday. It was an evenly played first half as both teams were knotted at
40-40 at the half. In the third quarter, the Timberwolves went up by ten
points, but the 'Cats battled back and tied the game on Krahn's last second
three-pointer.
It was a battle of the benches in overtime as the officials called 80 fouls
throughout the game with 11 people fouling out. The 'Cats outscored the
Timberwolves 17-11 in the extra frame to earn their first league win of the
season.
Krahn led the team with 22 points, 9 rebounds and 6 assists while Steve
Klassen (4th yr. Sardis) had 21 points. Rookie forward Paul Schmitke scored 20
points.
The 'Cats take on Douglas College (1-0) November 10-11 at 8 pm at New
Westminister.
First half Costly
Oct. 28, 2006
The men's basketball team allowed the visiting Blue Angels take a
commanding 53-33 lead into the second half to defeat the 'Cats
91-85.
The flat start for the 'Cats allowed the Blue Angels to build a lead that they
would not relinquish. CBC shot 37.8% from the field to the Angels 52.6% during
the opening half.
The 'Cats looked like a completely different team in the second half,
starting with their intensity and ability to convert opportunities. CBC
outscored the Angels 52-38, and improved their shooting percentage to 59.4%.
CBC looked to pull even with less than a minute remaining, but a costly turnover
allowed the Angels to transition down the court, capped off by a three-pointer
by former Trinity Western guard David Martens.
Leading the way for CBC was Joel Bron (2nd yr. Surrey) with 25 points. Steve
Klassen (4th yr. Sardis) shot 5/11 from the three to finish with 20 points.
Steve Janzen was the leading scorer for the Angels with 23 points.
The 'Cats begin their regular season November 3-4 against the University of
Northern BC in Prince George.
