Men's Volleyball at NCCAA Nationals
April 1, 2005

The men's volleyball team lost to Hope International 3-0 in the NCCAA National finals on Saturday at Walla Walla College.  Dean Rozema and Joel Ewald were both named tournament all-stars.

Volleyball team sweeps CNC
February 21, 2005

Scores of the game were 26-24, 25-23, 25-13.  Jon Boldt led the team with 12 kills. 

On Saturday the 'Cats played a very entertaining game against the Okangan University College Lakers in Kelowna.  The Bearcats started strong and won the first set 25-22 before falling to the Lakers in the next 3 sets by scores 25-16, 25-23, 25-20.  Boldt led the team with 11 kills.  Trent Krahn was named player of the game with 8 kills and 2 blocks.

On  Friday against College of the Rockies, the 'Cats lost 3-0 by scores 25-21, 25-22, 25-18.

The 'Cats finish league play with a 3-17 league record.

'Cats dropped by Mariners & Chargers
February 12, 2005

The CBC men's volleyball team took on some of the league's best this weekend.  On Friday they hosted #4 Malaspina Mariners and lost 3-0 and on Saturday they lost in four sets to #3 Camosun Chargers 3-1.

Against the Mariners the 'Cats lost by scores 25-17, 25-19, 25-22.

On Saturday against the Chargers scores of the match were 25-16, 25-13, 23-25, 25-13.  Third-year outside hitter Dean Rozema and rookie Ryan de Rooy led the team with 8 kills apiece.  Kevin Loewen led the team with 7 digs.

Next weekend the Bearcats travel to Cranbrook and Kelowna before coming back to Columbia Place to play College of New Caledonia on Sunday, February 20 at 8:00 pm to conclude the season.

Blues and Falcons topple Bearcats
February 7, 2005

The men's volleyball team lost 3-0 to #1 Capilano College on Friday and 3-2 to #9 Langara on Saturday in BCCAA league action. 

In Friday's contest against the #1 Blues, the scores of the match were 25-21, 25-14, 25-14.  Middle blocker Andrew Barwich led the 'Cats with 8 kills and 1 block. Outside hitter Ryan de  Rooy had 7 kills.

Against the Falcons the 'Cats lost the first set 25-17 before winning the next two 25-20, 25-23.  The Falcons narrowed out a 26-24 win in the fourth and used their momentum to win 15-11 in the fifth.  Jon Boldt was solid and contributed with 16 kills on the right side.  Barwich led the team with 4 blocks.

The loss drops the 'Cats league record to 2-13 and will host Malaspina U.C. and Camosun College this weekend in their final home games of the season.

A Royals Welcome
January 29, 2005

The men's volleyball team travelled to play the Douglas College Royals on Friday and came home with a 3-1 upset win. Scores of the game were 25-16, 23-25, 25-20, 25-23.

The 'Cats seemed to control each set from the get-go and were very steady on offense and defense.  The Royals led 23-20 in the fourth set before the 'Cats came back to take the game 25-23.

Outside hitter Ryan de Rooy had one of his best games of the year with a kill efficiency of 57%.  He led the team with 13 kills and 8 digs along with right-side player Jon Boldt who also tallied 13 kills.  Andrew Barwich was dominant in the middle and had 10 kills and 3 blocks.

The 'Cats travel to Capilano College on Friday (8:15 pm) and Langara on Saturday (8:00 pm).

Bearcats in tough
January 24, 2005

The CBC men's volleyball team took on the #7 nationally ranked UCC Sun Demons and lost 3-0 by scores 34-32, 25-14, 25-22.

It was an entertaining first set as both teams rallied to take the lead.  Both teams showed steady and consistent play with neither team willing to give much.  In the end it was the more experienced Sun Demons who prevailed 34-32. 

The 'Cats were led by Ryan de Rooy who tallied 7 kills while middle blocker Andrew Barwich contributed with 6 kills. 

The Bearcats (1-11) is up against Douglas College (6-6) this Friday, Jan. 28.  Game time is 8:15 pm.

Down to the wire
January 17, 2005

The CBC men's volleyball team lost a nail-biter to the visiting UCFV Cascades on Friday 3-1.

Scores of the match were 23-25, 27-25, 25-21, 25-22 in favor of the Cascades.

In what is becoming a rivalry between these two local Colleges, the 'Cats were looking to redeem themselves after losing to the Cascades 3-0 in their previous meeting. This time Columbia opened the game with a win in the opening set.  The 'Cats trailed 16-20 before first year outside hitter Ryan de Rooy changed the momentum with some effective serving to give his team the lead 21-20 that they would not relinquish.

Both teams played steady side-out ball in the following three sets with each game down to the wire. The loss drops the 'Cats to 1-10 on league play.

Jon Boldt led the team with 13 kills (40% KE) while de Rooy tallied 10 kills.  Michael Kroeker was solid in the middle and contributed with 7 kills and 4 blocks.

This weekend the 'Cats host University College of the Cariboo Sun Demons on Friday, Jan. 21 (8:15 pm) and College of New Caledonia on Saturday, Jan. 22 (8 pm).

Wolves defeated 3-1 by 'Cats
January 10, 2005

The CBC men's volleyball team defeated the Walla Walla Wolves in exhibition action 3-1 on Saturday.

The 'Cats came out on top with scores 25-20, 23-25, 25-12, 25-18.

Ryan de Rooy and Dean Rozema each tallied 12 kills while Andrew Barwich led the team with 4 stuff blocks. 

The 'Cats will be looking at carrying this momentum into this weekend when they host cross-town rivals the UCFV Cascades on Friday Jan. 14.  The women play at 6:30 pm followed by the men at 8:15 pm.

Avalanche & Lakers overtake 'Cats
November 29, 2004

The CBC men's volleyball team were defeated at home against College of the Rockies Avalanche and the Okanagan U.C. Lakers.

Against the Avalanche the 'Cats were downed 3-0 by scores 25-18, 25-20, 26-24.  In their next game, the team regrouped and came out playing well against the Lakers, winning the first set 25-18.  Both teams battled hard in the second but some missed serves late in the set by Columbia allowed the Lakers to win  25-23.  The Lakers won the fourth 25-15. The 'Cats got off to a great start and led for most of the fourth set before losing 27-25.

The team is off until hosting UCFV on January 14.

Can't close it out
November 22, 2004

The CBC men's volleyball faced two nationally ranked teams this weekend and came up short in both games.

On Friday, the 'Cats took on Malaspina University College Mariners (#3) in Nanaimo and lost 3-1 by scores 25-19, 25-18, 21-25, 25-21.  Outside hitters Dean Rozema and Jon Boldt led the team with 10 kills apiece while first-year player Ryan de Rooy tallied 9.  

On Saturday, the Bearcats travelled to Victoria to play #11 ranked Camosun College Chargers.  The 'Cats got the start they wanted and won the opening two sets 25-22, 25-21 before the Chargers came back to win the next three by scores 25-23, 25-14, 15-10.  The loss drops the 'Cats to a 1-7 record.

de Rooy led the team with 18 kills.

CBC has two league games remaining before the Christmas break.  Nov. 26 & 27 the 'Cats host College of the Rockies and Okanagan University College.

Bearcats win over Kodiaks
November 8, 2004

It's been a long time coming for the CBC men's volleyball team as  they won at the College of New Caledonia 3-1 on Saturday.

It's the first time over several years that the 'Cats have won in Prince George.  It was also the first league win for Bearcats (1-3) who defeated the Kodiaks 3-1 by scores 21-25, 25-17, 25-23, 25-19.

First-year outside hitter Ryan de Rooy carried the hot hand for the 'Cats in the power position as he tallied 17 kilks.  Jon Boldt was equally impressive with 14 kills on the right-side while Dean Rozema contributed with 12 attacks for points.

The 'Cats were handed a 3-0 loss the night before against the University College of Cariboo Sun Demons.  Scores of the match were 25-15, 25-22, 25-18.

CBC could not sustain much momentum in this match.  Boldt led the team with 6 kills.

This weekend the 'Cats host Capilano College and Langara College and will be looking to continue their winning ways.

No-show against rivals
October 31, 2004

The CBC men's volleyball team met up against cross-town rivals UCFV on Friday and fell 0-3.

The Bearcats were overtook by their opponents who played with more spirit and emotion throughout the game.  The 'Cats were swept 25-15, 25-19, 25-14.

First-year outside hitter Jon Boldt led the 'Cats with 7 kills on 16 attempts while 3rd year veteran Dean Rozema led the team with 5 digs.  This young Bearcats team had trouble establishing their defense and could only muster 4 stuff blocks all game combined with inconsistent passing and mis-hits allowed the Cascades to take advantage of unforced errors.

Even with the loss, the 'Cats know it is a long season with an opportunity to bounce back this weekend when they travel to UCC (Kamloops) and CNC (Prince George). 

'Cats and Royals battle
October 25, 2004

It was a classic battle of two teams not willing to give much, but in the end the men's volleyball team came up short.

The Douglas College Royals came out on top with a 3-2 win in the league season-opener.  Scores of the game were 25-21, 25-27, 19-25, 25-19, 15-10.

First year outside hitters Ryan de Rooy paced the 'Cats offensively with 19 kills and 3 blocks while Dean Rozema was solid with 12 kills.  6'4" middle player Andrew Barwich contributed with 10 kills. 

The 'Cats will be looking to bounce back against the UCFV Cascades on Friday, Oct. 29 when they pay a visit to their cross-town rivals.  Game time goes at 8 pm.

SKKU volleyball tops Bearcats
October 26, 2004

Visiting Sun Kyun Kwan University (Seoul Korea) triumphed over the CBC men's volleyball team 3-0 on Monday.

The young Bearcats team battled hard but the Korean university champs showed why they are ranked as one of the top university teams in the world.  They defeated the 'Cats 3-0 by scores 25-21, 25-22, 25-13.

Ryan de Rooy had 9 kills for the 'Cats while middle blocker Michael Kroeker tallied 6.  1st year setter Kerry Wall ran the offense and came up with some big digs throughout the match.

"You have to play against great teams if you expect to get better" commented head coach Tim Demant.  His team is now gearing up for cross-town rivals UCFV Cascades where the 'Cats play on Friday, Oct. 29 at 8 pm.

Prior to the game SKKU was defeated by Trinity Western University (3-1).

SKKU is taking part in the UBC West Coast Classic that takes place this weekend and also features Stanford University.

Red Deer Tournament results
October 14, 2004

The CBC men's volleyball team competed in Red Deer, AB Oct. 8-10 and came home with 4 wins and 3 losses.

Friday, Oct. 8
The 'Cats opened the tournament against Medicine Hat College and won handily 2-0 by scores 25-18, 25-14.  Ryan de Rooy led the team with 9 kills.  They would continue their winning ways against CMU (Winnipeg) 2-0 by scores 25-23, 25-9.  de Rooy led the team again with 5 kills.

CBC met up against College powerhouse Red Deer College, last years CCAA National Champions.  Despite a solid effort, the 'Cats lost 2-0 by scores 25-22, 25-16. 

Saturday, Oct. 9
SAIT would be their next opponent and defeated Columbia 2-1, 25-19, 12-25, 15-9.  Dean Rozeam led the team with 10 kills.The King's University College defeated Columbia in their next match 2-1, 25-21, 22-25, 15-9.  Michael Kroeker had a solid game in the middle with 5 blocks.

Sunday, Oct. 10
The 'Cats met up against SAIT one more time but this time came out with a 3-2 win by scores 22-25, 25-19, 13-25, 25-20, 15-12.  First year outside hitter Jon Boldt came alive and tallied 18 kills and 3 blocks, while Rozema notched 11 kills and 5 blocks.

CBC finished the tournament with a 3-1 win over BC rival College of the Rockies, 30-28, 19-25, 25-19, 25-18.  de Rooy and Boldt were solid on the outside with 14 and 12 kills respectively.

CBC will be taking part in the Douglas College tournament Oct. 15/16.

Old vs. New
October 4, 2004

The annual CBC alumni volleyball game took place on Saturday with the alumni winning 3-1.

The current squad won the first set handily 25-13 but lost the next three by scores 18-25, 19-25, 16-25.  The 'Cats will regroup as they prepare for the Red Deer College tournament that takes place October 8-10 at Red Deer, AB. 

CBC will play against Medicine Hat College, Canadian Mennonite University, Red Deer and SAIT before moving on to the playoff round.  Their first game goes on Friday, Oct. 8 against Medicine Hat at 5:00 pm.

Team Canada over Bearcats
September 27, 2004

It was a memorable experience for the men's volleyball team as they played against Team Canada Masters.

With only one returning starter, this young Bearcats team knew they would have their hands full. Not only was this their first ever home and College game playing together, it was an opportunity to play against former Canadian national and international stars. 

The pregame jitters were evident in the first set as the 'Cats looked a little tentative; the were downed by a score of 25-16.  However, the 'Cats gained confidence and improved upon their play in the following sets despite losing 25-21, 25-23, 26-24.  (Four sets were played for exhibition purposes) 

First-year middle blocker Mike Kroeker was named player of the game for CBC after leading the team with 8 points (6 kills, 2 blocks).  Squamish, BC native Ross Ballard was player of the game for Team Canada.

The 'Cats will now be focusing on the Red Deer College tournament on Thanksgiving weekend in Red Deer, AB.

It's Team Canada vs. the Columbia Men's volleyball team!

The CBC men's volleyball team will be playing against former national and international players from Canada when they host the Team Canada Masters (age 30 and older) this Saturday, Sept. 25 at 7:00 pm at Columbia Place.Coming off a provincial silver medal and national bronze medal last season, the 'Cats are looking to kick-start their season against some of the top players in Canada.  "We have revamped our line-up considerably and are much younger, but I expect our team to compete at a high level again this year", commented head coach Tim Demant, the BC College Coach of the Year the past two seasons.

Boon named All-Conference
The Bearcats men's basketball team captain and leading scorer, Kyle Boon, was named to the 2nd team All-Conference by the coaches of the BCCAA. Kyle was second in league scoring, averaging 20 points per game.
