Feb. 17, 2007
The men's volleyball team lost both games to the #5 nationally ranked Malaspina Mariners this weekend.
The 'Cats put up a fight in Friday's game and nearly forced the Mariners to the
brink. CBC lost 3-1 by scores 25-19, 19-25, 25-19, 25-23.
Chad Friesen
(2nd yr. Abbotsford) continued his dominant play on the outside with 14 kills
and 1 ace. Kit Williams (2nd yr. Abbotsford) led the team with 4
blocks.
The Mariners picked up their play on Saturday and won 3-0 by
scores 25-15, 25-10, 25-20. With the win the Mariners clinch first place with a
15-1 record; the 'Cats fall to 5-11 and finish in eighth place.
Friesen selected as All-Star
Feb. 21, 2007
Chad Friesen, the high-flying, second year outside hitter of the CBC
men's volleyball team, was selected as a BCCAA 2nd Team All-Star.
The 6'1"Friesen,
a graduate of Yale Secondary, was selected as an All-Star for his strong play
for the second straight year.
Friesen led the league in kill efficiency
with a 3.82 average. He combined for 187 kills in 49 league games this year.
Overall, Chad led his team with 293 kills in 83 games; aces with 36; and passing
efficiency at 2.11
Cascades Sweep Battle
Feb. 10, 2007
The CBC volleyball teams fell to cross-town rival UCFV in straight sets on Friday night.
WVB: Bearcats tripped by Cascades
The first set was a back and forth
contest as both teams traded points but the Cascades came away with the 25-21
set win. The Cascades kept the pressure on and won the remaining two sets easily
25-19 and 25-14 to win the match 3-0.
“We had a shaky start but we stuck to our game plan and we kept the pressure
on,” said head coach Bob Yuen as he was very pleased with his team’s efforts
tonight.
Delayne Peters (3rd, Abbotsford) returned from injury tonight and proved to
be an immediate impact and she notched the Player of the game and led Fraser
Valley with 15 kills. On the defensive end of things, the Cascades Stacey Chomos
(2nd, Coquitlam) and Carrolyn Jennings (3rd, Maple Ridge) each had nine and
eight digs respectively.
For the 'Cats, outside hitter Kara Jansen Van
Doorn led her team with 9 kills and 2 stuff blocks.
"We played some of
our best ball in the first couple sets and got stuck in a couple rotations in
the third that cost us," commented head coach Rocky Olfert. "UCFV made the big
plays at key moments, but overall I'm proud of how far our team has come in the
last few weeks."
The Cascades improved their chances of making the playoffs and it will all
come down to how they do in the final two matches of the season next weekend
when they head to Camosun to take on the Chargers. Friday’s match will take
place at 6:30pm and Saturday contest will get underway at 2:00pm. The Bearcats
conclude the regular season against #1 ranked Malaspina Mariners in Nanaimo.
MVB: Cascades dominant from start to finish in win over CBC
It took exactly one hour for the Fraser Valley Cascades to make quick work of
the CBC Bearcats. The Cascades took the Battle of Abbotsford winning 3-0 in
front of a packed house at the Student Activity Centre on Friday night.
A very entertaining first set between the arch rivals but the Cascades
eventually took control and won the set 25-22. The remaining two sets were a
breeze as the Cascades won the second set 25-15 and the remaining set only
taking 15 minutes to complete with the Cascades winning 25-13 and the match
3-0.
A depleted CBC head coach Tim Demant said after the match that “Their
experience showed tonight and ours didn’t.”
Derek Fletcher (3rd, Langley) continued to be a leader as he had 13 kills and
three aces. Many of Fletcher’s kills were of the highlight reel type as the ball
was crushed as it smacked the gym floor and the crowd erupted as so did his
teammates. One of the graduating seniors, Setter Marco Russo (4th, Winfield) was
strong on the defensive end with nine digs while the rookie Nathan Toews
(Abbotsford) led the team with 11 digs. The other graduating seniors did well in
their final matches on home court as Carl Nienhuis (4th, Abbotsford) and Joel
Krueger (4th, Chilliwack) combined for 23 points of total offense.

Getting Ready for Battle
Feb. 6, 2007
More than city-wide bragging rights are at stake when the Fraser
Valley Cascades meet up with Columbia Bible Bearcats Friday, February 9
at UCFV.
A play-off spot is up for grabs in this year's second installment of the "Battle
of Abbotsford".
Fraser Valley hosts Columbia Friday, February 9 at the Student Activity
Centre, in the final home game of the 2006-07 season. The women's game gets
underway at 6 p.m., followed by the men's match-up at 7:45 p.m.
The Cascades men's team (6-7 BCCAA) currently sits a game up on CBC (5-8
BCCAA) for the sixth and final playoff spot with just three games remaining on
the schedule. The Cascades officially wrap-up the regular season next weekend at
Camosun. Since Fraser Valley joined the BCCAA in the 2004-05 season they have
never made the playoffs, nor have they suffered a loss at the hands of the
Bearcats. In this year's earlier installment of the Battle of Abbotsford the
Cascades handed CBC a 3-0 homecourt loss in late November.
Friday's match-up also marks the last home game of the season for the
Cascades, also meaning final hurrah for a trio of Fraser Valley seniors. Setter
Marco Russo (Winfield), middle-back Carl Nienhuis (Abbotsford), and Joel Krueger
(Chilliwack) will all play in front of the home crowd for the last time, and are
keen on going out winners. For BCCAA All-Academic Krueger, he will be facing the
team in which he got his start. The current league leader in stuff-blocks played
his rookie season at CBC in 2003-04, with January 30th of that season being the
last time CBC defeated Fraser Valley.
Fraser Valley's women's squad (4-9 BCCAA) is currently locked in a three-way
tie with Columbia Bible (4-9 BCCAA) and Camosun (4-8 BCCAA) for two of three
available playoff spots. CBC shocked the Cascades with a 3-0 sweep in their
earlier meeting this season to send the Cascades into a tailspin. Since falling
to CBC in late November, Fraser Valley has dropped six of their eight conference
games and will need to snap out of their funk if they hope to make it two
straight seasons with trips to the Provincials.
Tickets are available at
the door of the Student Activity Centre. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for
seniors/students/children.

Cross-town rivalry continues
Nov. 24, 2006
The CBC men's volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss to cross-town rival UCFV in the Battle of Abbotsford.
Scores of the match were 27-25, 25-22, 26-24.
The Cascades took an early
8-6 lead in the first set but CBC put together an effective run to go ahead 10-9
on a Chad Friesen (2nd yr., Abbotsford) kill. It was an evenly played game
until the late going when the Cascades went up 22-20. The 'Cats put together
two straight points to tie the game, but the Cascades quickly went ahead 23-22.
Kit Williams (2nd yr. Abbotsford) tied the game on a kill from the middle. Both
teams would continue exchanging points until Fraser Valley put away the set on
an outside spike from former Bearcat Jon Bolt to win 27-25.
Fraser
Valley won the second handily and used that momentum to go ahead 8-5 in the
third set. That's when CBC coach Tim Demant was assessed a yellow card on a
questionable ball handling call by the official. In the ensuing play a CBC
player was assessed a yellow card on a similar call by the official to make the
score 10-5. After CBC timeout the 'Cats stormed back to take an 11-10 lead.

and 2 aces.
The win improves their league record to 3-3.

The men's volleyball team came close but could not steal a set from the visiting Douglas Royals on Saturday.
The Royals defeated the 'Cats 3-0 by scores 25-18, 29-27, 25-20 in Saturday's
match. CBC had two opportunities to finish the game in set 2, but the
relentless defense of the Royals allowed them to convert
offensively.

'Cats has he tallied 17 kills on 36 attempts. Ryan Ewald (1st yr. Houston, BC)
chipped in with 5 kills while middle blocker Kit Williams (2nd yr. Abbotsford)

10 missed serves in the contest, and were unable to put together consistent
