                      2004 NCCAA II Champions!

Game #6 - Southwestern 71 vs. Simpson 68

The Southwestern Eagles are the NCCAA II Champions after defeating #1 Simpson College in a thrilling championship game.  Simpson led 36-35 at the half and these teams continued to share the lead throughout the second half.  Southwestern led 69-66 with 60 seconds remaining when Simpson forward Paul Kaukonen made two free throws to bring Simpson to within one, 69-68.  On Southwestern's next possession they failed to score and Simpson took possession and called a timeout with 24 seconds on the clock.  After the timeout the Vangaurd looked poised to defend their title but a blocked shot by Southwestern's Jared Kalvie allowed the Eagles to regain possession and were immediatly fouled with 1.8 seconds remaining.  David Ellis made both free throws and the score 71-68.  Simpson than called one last timeout and designed a play where forward Mike Grinder caught the ball at half and heaved a desperate three that bounced off the rim as time expired.
