Bearcats Win BCCAA Founder's Cup

Abbotsford, BC

June 1, 2004
Even with the season long over, the Columbia Bible College Athletics Department keeps on winning.  This time, capturing the British Columbia Colleges' Athletics Association's (BCCAA) Founder's Cup, awarded annually to the BCCAA athletics program that shows the greatest improvement from the previous year.

The Bearcats men's and women's volleyball teams showed significant improvement this year with both teams qualifying for the Provincial Championships, and the men capturing  Provincial Silver and National Bronze medals.  The women, coached by Rocky Olfert, added 5 more wins this year than they had last year, enroute to qualifying for their first ever Provincial Championship.  The men added four more wins, over an 18 match league schedule.

After finishing fourth out of thirteen schools the past two seasons, the Bearcats vaulted to the top of the Founder's Cup standings this season.  "Winning the Founder's Cup is a great tribute to our student-athletes and coaches, who have work very hard.   It also signals that the program is moving in the right direction", stated Tim Demant, Columbia's Athletics Director and Men's Volleyball Coach.  "To win this award, it means the entire athletics program is moving forward and not just one team.  It is exciting to be a part of."

Along with the volleyball teams' successes, the Bearcats soccer teams also tasted glory this season, capturing the Metro Women's and the Abbotsford Men's Soccer League Championships.  While the men's basketball narrowly missed a chance to compete in the NCCAA National Championships, they are looking to be an early favourite next season to win their Region. Joining the Athletics Department next season, and hoping to contribute to the winning ways, will be a brand new women's basketball team that is set to begin competing this fall.

Reader, Rozema join 'Cats

May 18, 2004
Columbia athletics is pleased to announce that Cheyla Reader and Janelle Rozema will be part of the 2004-05 women's volleyball team.  Reader, a 5’11” middle and outside hitter, was heavily recruited by several Colleges and has decided to sign with the Bearcats.  Rozema, a 5’10” outside hitter, played the last two years at Briercrest Bible College and brings a wealth of skill and experience from the always-competitive Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC).

As a Courtney B.C. native, Cheyla starred at Highland Secondary in Comox where she was co-captain and recently led the Comox Valley Smash club team to a top ten finish at the Juvenile Provincial Championships.  Aside from picking up numerous All-Star awards this past year, Cheyla was named the top recruit from Vancouver Island and was recently invited to tryout for the U18 B.C. provincial team.  As a player, Cheyla has been influenced by her older brother, Martin Reader, a CCAA All-Canadian who is currently representing Canada at the U20 World Beach Volleyball Championships in Mexico.

Janelle Rozema will transfer to Columbia after playing two years at Briercrest Bible College as part of the ACAC.  Rozema, a native of Sherwood Park, AB, is a powerful outside hitter and defensive specialist after finishing the 2003-04 season in the league top 10 in digs (1.99 avg. per game).  Her volleyball experience, which includes playing for the Grant MacEwan Griffins club elite team and participating in the North Queensland Games (Australia) in beach volleyball, will be a large asset to a young Columbia team.

"We are very excited to have these two high-calibre and quality athletes join our program in our quest to compete for a provincial championship", commeted head coach Rocky Olfert.

CBC adds Women's Basketball

April 8, 2004
Columbia Bible College Athletics announces the creation of a Women’s Basketball team as part of the Columbia Athletics Department.  Beginning this September, Columbia will field a women’s basketball that will compete against Canadian and American colleges as well as local women’s league teams.

“We are excited about adding women’s basketball, and feel that the time is right to add this team”, commented Tim Demant, Columbia Athletics Director.  “The valley has a strong history of women’s basketball, and our team will allow even more women the opportunity to compete close to home”.

In preparation for the addition, the Bearcats have made application to the BC Colleges’ Athletics Association (BCCAA) for men’s and women’s basketball. If accepted, both teams would officially begin competing in BCCAA basketball in September 2005.  Already a BCCAA member in men’s and women’s volleyball, Columbia hopes the addition of men’s and women’s basketball will allow for the continued improvement and development of its Athletics Programs.  “To have all our indoor teams competing in the BCCAA only makes sense, and with the addition of women’s basketball it is now a possibility”, stated Demant.  BCCAA gender equity rules require member institutions to field both a men’s and women’s team for each sport they compete in.  Columbia has fielded a men’s basketball team since 1967, but have competed south of the border in the US because of the lack of a women’s team.  Columbia’s athletics teams have shown great improvement over the past number of years, with it men’s and women’s soccer teams capturing league championships and men’s volleyball winning a national Bronze Medal.

The Bearcats are currently seeking student-athletes as well as a head coach to lead their new squad into the upcoming season and future BCCAA play.  Interested  student-athletes or coaching applicants can find out more on the Bearcats website at   www.columbiabc.edu/athletics or via email at athletics@columbiabc.edu

'Cats win Championship!

March 20, 2004
The CBC men's soccer team won the Abbotsford Men's Soccer League championship game on Saturday with a 1-0 win over Celtic.  The Celtic, last year's championship team, were limited in their scoring opportunities while the 'Cats capitalized on their chances.

The only goal of the game came from league goal scoring champ Phil Vallely.  Rhett Jewett played a great ball across the field to Al Gillespie who relayed the ball to Elliot Westergaard in the box.  Westergaard showed great patience before delivering the ball to Vallely who went in alone on the keeper and made a great play to score.  The 'Cats defense was great throughout the playoffs as Joel Hooton earned his third straight shutout and defenders Brian Dickison, Rhett Jewett, Randy Taylor and Anthony Armor solidified the back.  "This is a very talented team and the guys worked hard throughout the year.  They have a lot to be proud of", commented head coach Greg Falk.

The 'Cats finish the season with a record of 17-1-1 including finishing in top spot in the regular season.  The 'Cats last claimed the AMSL Cup was in 1998.

First year player Phil Vallely (left) was also awarded the league's top goal scorer.

Silver medal for 'Cats

Feb. 28, 2004
The Columbia men's volleyball team lost to the #1 Capilano College Blues tonight in four sets and come away with a provincial silver medal.  Scores of the match were 26-28, 25-18, 25-22, 25-16.  It is the highest placing at provincials Columbia has ever made, and will likely earn them a wild-card berth into the national championships taking place in Edmonton March 11-13.

In the first set, the Blues led for most of the match and were 21-19 until a kill by Clayton Peters closed the gap to one.  On the next play, an error by Blues Mike Drew allowed the 'Cats to tie at 21-21.  The teams would battle point for point and with the score 27-26 for Columbia, outside hitter Dean Rozema made a kill off the Capilano block to give the 'Cats the victory in the first set, 28-26.

In the second set, the Blues jumped to a 12-7 lead but five straight serves by 'Cats captain Stephen Balzer built some momentum and tied the game at 12-12.  The Blues would call timeout and began to take control of the set.  Leading 18-16, the Capilano turned it on and went on to take the set 25-18.

The third set was a battle from the get-go, but Capilano made a run late in the set and led as much as 23-18.  After a CBC timeout, Dale Hoogendoorn served tactfully and the 'Cats were able to rally to bring the score to within one, 23-22.  Capilano hitter Mike Drew, the game MVP, scored on the next play on a kill down the line to make it 24-22.  The Blues would win the set by an error by Peters after hitting the ball out.

The 'Cats seemed to sputter in the final set and were unable to sustain the emotion and physical energy that had used throughout the tournament.  The Blues led from the start and cruised to a 25-16 win and a provincial championship.

Columbia players Dale Hoogendoorn and Cory Hilditch were both named tournament all-stars for their spectacular play this weekend.

The Falcons were led by CCAA All-Canadian Kate Szolomicki who was an offensive threat throughout the match.  The 'Cats were led by BCCAA 2nd Team All-Star Sharon Wiens who tallied 8 kills in the loss.

"We lost to a very good team but not from lack of effort or heart", commented head coach Rocky Olfert.  "We are a young team and still learning what it takes to compete and be successful at the top."

These teams square off in a quarterfinal game on Thursday at 6:30pm.

Unbeaten streak continues

Feb. 7, 2004
CBC men's soccer team extended their unbeaten streak 13 games with a 2-0 win over Mission City FC.  The 'Cats dominated possession but were unable to score until Al Gillespie pounced on a rebound that was shot from Phil Vallely.  The score remained 1-0 until midway through the second half when Gillespie put a corner kick on the head of Sixtus Okindo who finished it nicely.  The defense of Randy Taylor, Brian Dickison and Rhett Jewett were solid all game and limited Mission City to only a few scoring chances.

From high to low

Feb. 1, 2004
After reaching the height of success Thursday with an upset win over the UCFV Cascades, the CBC men's basketball team knew they had to refocus on two big road games this weekend. On Friday the 'Cats travelled to Portland to take on Multnomah Bible College and then to Eugene on Saturday to play Eugene Bible College.  How did they respond to the challenge?

Against Multnomah, CBC lost 88-82 led by forward Steve Klassen having 18 points and grabbing 14 rebounds and Ben Seinen with 22 points. Third year player Jon Balzer was having a great game with 23 points before he was injured with 9 minutes remaining in the game.  Coach Rudy Teichrob was disapointed with loss.  "We allowed 18 offensive rebounds that really hurt us and we must become mentally stronger to get the job done on the glass. We did not do a good job of blocking out and didn't play with the same passion we had the night before agaisnt UCFV."

CBC closed off the trip with a disapointing 85-82 loss to Eugene Bible College. The loss marks the first time the 'Cats have lost to Eugene. Ben Seinen had another good game with 36 points and 10 rebounds while Klassen had 19 and Jon Schmidt had 17 points. "It was frustrating to say the least. But I also give Eugene credit for playing hard and smart and they deserved to win", commented Teichrob after the game.

The 'Cats will close out the regular season with a huge home game against Multnomah on Saturday.  Game time is set for 8:00pm.

CBC men sweep UCFV men

Jan. 29, 2004
Tonight the CBC Bearcats hosted their cross-town rival UCFV Cascades in a back to back affair.  First, it was men's volleyball going head-to-head followed by the always intense rivalry between the men's basketball teams.  The 'Cats won both games tonight with the volleyball team winning 3-0 and basketball team winning in a thriller 81-78.

Men's volleyball won handily by scores 25-21, 25-18, 25-16.  The 'Cats kept the UCFV defense on their toes with effective serving and by executing combinations on offense.  All CBC players had an opportunity to play this evening.

In men's basketball, the 'Cats led by 9 points at the half and continued to solidify that lead for most of the second half until the late going.  The Cascades came within one, 73-72 with 3 minutes remaining but were held to just 6 points in the final minutes.  With 23 seconds remaining and the score 80-78, CBC forward Ben Seinen was fouled but missed both free throws.  On the ensuing possession,  the 'Cats made a huge stop on defense and took possession of ball when first year guard Jon Schmidt was fouled with 2.6 seconds remaining.  Schmidt went to the line and hit one of the two to make the score 81-78. The Cascades than called a timeout to strategize their next play, only to miss a desperate three-point shot from way beyond the arc on the final play of the game.

CBC forward Ben Seinen led the 'Cats with 29 points and 6 rebounds while Steve Klassen and Jon Balzer each had 15 points.  Jon Schmidt did a great job running the offense while Jeff Janzen went 3/4 from the field and 5 rebounds.  Mike McLaverty led the Cascades with 27 points.

The 'Cats are now off to Portland where they play Friday and Eugene where they play Saturday.

"The guys worked hard this weekend and deserve this outcome. Our challenge now is to maintain this level of play", commented head coach Tim Demant.

A win in Walla Walla

Jan. 26, 2004
The CBC men's basketball team travelled to Walla Walla, WA this weekend and earned a split with the NCCAA Div. 1 team. On Saturday the 'Cats shot the ball well (52%) but committed 12 turovers that allowed Walla Walla to stay in the game.  CBC did a better job in the second half and with some defensive pressure causing Walla Walla to turn the ball over allowing the 'Cats to build their lead and win 83-75.  Steve Klassen led the team with 23 points while Ben Seinen finished with 20 and guard Jon Schmidt scored 18.  This victory marks the first time that the 'Cats have defeated Walla Walla.

CBC seemed to lose their energy in the second game and lost 93-77.  The 'Cats kept it close for most of the game until the last five minutes when Walla Walla began to pull away.  Steve Klassen worked hard all game and had 28 points to lead the 'Cats; Schmidt had 24 and Seinen had 15.

The next big game for the 'Cats is Thursday when they take on UCFV.  Game time is 8pm.

Second-year outside hitter Dean Rozema (Sherwood Park) paced the 'Cats with a team high 17 kills, while Clayton Peters (2nd yr., Abbotsford) was solid in the middle with 15 kills and 2 blocks. The win was especially special as CBC lost the night before 3-2 to the College of New Caledonia Kodiaks by scores 25-21, 25-23, 25-27, 18-25, 15-11. "The guys responded well from that tough loss. We did a great job defensively and were able to close out the set when we had too", commented head coach Tim Demant, whose team sits at 5-4 (3rd place) going into the Christmas break. Against the Kodiaks, 6'4" outside hitter Dale Hoogendoorn (2nd yr. Agassiz) recorded 18 kills and 3 blocks while Peters notched 15 kills, 5 blocks and 12 digs.
League action resumes Friday, January 16 when the 'Cats host Langara College at 8:15pm.

'Cats split on the road

Nov. 24, 2003
Good starts to road trips does not mean they will end that way, and that was the case for the CBC women's volleyball team. After defeating the College of New Caledonia Kodiaks 3-1 on Friday, the 'Cats made costly unforced errors and lost 3-0 on Saturday to the University College of the Cariboo. Against the Kodiaks, CBC won by scores 25-14, 19-25, 25-22, 25-18. In the third set, the Kodiaks had a 22-19 lead but the 'Cats fought back with some huge kills and blocks and effective serving by first-year setter Kristie Neufeld (White Rock, BC). "The team showed a lot of determination in that set and we built some momentum from that and carried it into the fourth set", commented head coach Rocky Olfert. Team captain Sharon Wiens (3rd yr. Edmonton) had 12 kills and 2 aces in the match while Amy Caplin (1st yr., Langley) tallied 9 kills.
The win moved the 'Cats to 4-4 in league play and were hoping to continue their winning ways on Saturday against the Cariboo. Unfortunately, CBC came out flat with inconsistent passing and no offense and lost by scores 25-11, 25-8, 25-17. "It's very disappointing to lose the way we did. We just couldn't do anything right tonight", remarked Olfert. The loss drops the 'Cats to 4-5 (6th place) and concludes the first half of the league season. League action resumes Friday, January 16 when the 'Cats host Langara College at 6:30pm.

'Cats defeat rival Multnomah

Nov. 24, 2003
The CBC men's basketball team competed at the Multnomah Bible College Tournament (Portland, OR) Nov. 20-22 and came away with 1 win and 2 losses. The 'Cats opened the tournament with a 80-61 loss to a very strong Kentucky Christian team. CBC shot 34% overall and only 2/20 from the three; Ben Seinen (1st yr. Houston, BC) led the team with 20 points while guard Jon Schmidt (1st yr. Chilliwack) scored 16. "Defensively we weren't too bad but we did struggle shooting wise again and this is definitely an area that the players are going to have to improve on", commented head coach Rudy Teichrob.
In the second game against Multnomah, the 'Cats stormed back from a 51-43 halftime deficit to beat their region rival 93-77. Making some defensive adjust at the half, CBC kept Multnomah to 26 points in the second while the 'Cats scored 50 points. "This was a great win over a regional opponent and someone we will have to beat in the regional playoffs" noted Teichrob. Jon Balzer (3rd yr. Abbotsford) had a great game with 24 points and 7 rebounds; guard Jon Schmidt finished with 18; Jeff Janzen (1st yr. Sherwood Park) and Ben Seinen each had 16 and forward Steve Klassen (2nd yr., Ladner) finished with 15.
The third and final game was against Lancaster College (Pennsylvania) and the 'Cats were defeated 88-81. Steve Klassen had a career high 34 points and 6 rebounds. The loss was disappointing for CBC, whose next match is December 6 at Northwest College. "As a team with seven freshman we need to learn to play on consecutive days with a consistent effort and right now they are not doing that" Teichrob said. "Taking care of the ball and improving the shooting percentage are two areas that need to improve for this team to go anywhere in the regional playoffs in February."
Next up for the Bearcats is a trip to Kirkland, WA on December 6. The cross-town rivalry heats up on Dec. 12 as the Cats make a visit to UCFV, a must see game for everyone that promises to be exciting. The team then has two weeks off for the Christmas break before hosting the Abbotsford City College tournament Dec. 27 - 29.
