Mission Statement

To prepare students for a life of discipleship, service, and ministry by providing opportunities for physical, social, emotional, mental and spiritual development through the pursuit of athletic excellence.

Statement of Philosophy

Columbia Athletics exists as an integral part of the mission of Columbia Bible College, and its mission "to prepare students for a life of discipleship, service and ministry in the contemporary world". This program offers its participants and supporters a valuable experience to develop their God-given talents and abilities. Through the proclaiming and modeling of a Christ-like character by those in leadership, Columbia Athletics provides intentional instruction and opportunity in the integration of faith and sport, spiritual growth, personal development, and leadership development.

Columbia Bible College offers an intercollegiate athletics program to provide an opportunity for skilled athletes to participate in sport competition at an advanced level. To support this, CBC's goal is to recruit, develop and retain technically and ethically competent coaches with a heart for ministry.

Objectives

Columbia Bible College offers an intercollegiate athletics program to provide an opportunity for skilled athletes to participate in sport competition at an advanced level.  To support this, CBC’s goal is to recruit, develop and retain technically and ethically competent coaches with a heart for ministry.

The following are specific objectives of the Columbia Athletic program:

1. To provide an opportunity for highly skilled men and women to participate in a variety of sport competitions at an advanced level.

2. To develop and maintain a sport ministry/outreach emphasis

3. To intentionally emphasize leadership development through involvement in sport.

4. To conduct athletic contests between Columbia and various schools/teams in accordance with specified rules.

5. To provide an opportunity for student-athletes to excel to the highest potential of his or her ability.

6. To compete at a high level and strive to win in the contests that CBC teams participate in.

7. To develop physical fitness, athletic skill and knowledge, good sportsmanship and other desirable social and personal qualities.

8. To promote and provide a high level of athletic competition as a desirable form of student entertainment.

9. To promote unity between various teams, CBC students, faculty, alumni, friends and the Abbotsford community through a common identity and supportive fellowship.

Membership

Columbia Bible College is a member of several athletic leagues and organizations at both the local and national level. These leagues and organizations include:

Metro Women's Soccer League (MWSL)-Women's Soccer

Fraser Valley Soccer Leaue (FVSL) - Soccer 

British Columbia College Athletic Association (BCCAA) - Men's & Women's Volleyball, Men's & Women's Basketball 

Canadian College Athletic Association (CCAA) - Men's & Women's Volleyball, Men's & Women's Basketball 

Athlete Elgibility Requirements

1.  LEAGUE REQUIREMENTS

BCCAA Eligibility Requirements (Basketball, Volleyball & Golf): A student-athlete shall be eligible to participate if they are currently registered at Columbia Bible College in at least 9 credit hours in each semester they are playing, as well as have successfully complete 18 credit hours in the previous year,.  First semester athletes must pass at least 6 credits in order to be eligible for second semester competition.
NOTE:  Any athlete who reduces his/her course load below 9 hours  must immediately inform his/her coach and the Athletic Director.

Soccer:   All athletes must be registered students at Columbia.  Exceptions may be made in extenuating circumstances, as approved by the Athletics Department.  Preference will be given to full-time students, then part-time students.
 

2.  ACADEMIC REQUIREMENTS

Athletes are expected to maintain suitable study/work habits as well as maintain a minimum cumulative G.P.A. of 2.0.  Those athletes who do not meet this requirement at the semester break will meet with the Athletics Director.  At this time, the athlete’s future participation on his/her team will be discussed and their name will be brought to the Student Development department for further consideration.  Failing to meet these expectations may result in a suspension or removal from the team for a period of time, to be determined by the Student Development department.

Demant departs CBC
Make no mistake, Tim Demant looks back fondly on his decade-long posting as athletic director and men’s volleyball coach at Columbia Bible College. But listening to Demant describe his new gig at Goshen College in Indiana, it quickly becomes clear that the 36-year-old feels like he’s died and gone to athletic director heaven.

Bearcats Announce New Basketball Coach
The Columbia Bearcats athletics department is pleased to announce that Jay Duke has signed on to become the Head Coach of the Bearcats Women’s Basketball program.

Athletics Awards Night
The Columbia athletics department hosted it's annual Awards Night banquet last Friday. Student-athletes from each team were recognized in a variety of categories.

Bearcats Women's Volleyball ID Camp
The Bearcats women's volleyball program will be holding a player identification camp on March 21st and 22nd for all players, aged 16 and over. Click on more for further information.

Bearcats Finish 4th
The Columbia Bible College Bearcats men’s basketball team may not have matched last year’s bronze medal finish at provincials, but the team is not necessarily complaining. The Bearcats finished fourth in the B.C. Colleges Athletic Association (BCCAA) provincial championships held in Prince George, after losing the bronze medal game to Victoria’s Camosun College Chargers 95-81 on Saturday.

'Cats Ballers Go North
The Columbia Bearcats men's basketball is off to Prince George for the BCCAA Championships. They will face the Malaspina Mariners on Thursday evening in their first game.

Bearcats Win Bronze at Provincials
Despite being the sixth and final seed heading into the BC Colleges Provincial Championships in Nanaimo this past weekend, the Columbia Bearcats women’s volleyball team returned home with a Bronze medal after defeating their cross-town rivals from UCFV 3-1 (23-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-21) to win the bronze.

Bearcats to Play for Bronze
The women's volleyball team lost to a powerful UBCO Lakers squad in the semi-finals of the BCCAA Provincial Championships on Friday. The Bearcats will now face the loser of the match between UCFV and Malaspina.

'Cats Win in Historic Upset
The 6th seeded Bearcats women's volleyball team have defeated the 3rd seeded Capilano College Blues in the opening game of the BCCAA 2008 Provincial Championships in Nanaimo.

Bearcats Earn All-Star Honors
Two Bearcat volleyball players were honored by the BCCAA as league All-Stars. Cheyla Reader was voted to the 1st All-Star Team by BCCAA head coaches. Men's team standout Chad Friesen was voted to the 2nd All-Star Team.
