Women's Basketball Preview
November 3, 2005
Season preview of the women's basketball team as they get set to take on the #2 UCFV Cascades.
Head coach Amber Beauregard is cautiously optimistic as a coach can be at this point in the season. With a core of returning veterans and the addition of some key recruits, the sophomore head coach has put together a team that is anxiously awaiting their league debut in the BCCAA.
“We have been preparing ourselves for league play for over a year and have worked hard to put together a team that we are excited about”, commented Beauregard. With the help of assistant coaches and former Trinity Western University players Angela Booy and Samantha Hill, the head coach believes that this team will not only play but compete in every game. “Our two preseason tournaments (Capilano Oct. 7-9, Malaspina Oct. 21/22) have allowed our players a chance to understand our system and help our younger players adjust to playing at this level.”
The Bearcats will be relying on four returning starters from last season – 5’9” guard and transfer from Lethbridge Community College, Alisha Marriot; 5’7” guard from W.J. Mouat, Anali Taylor; 5’8” guard from M.E.I., Julie Rempel; and a 6’2” forward from Victoria, Alea Beaumont. Beauregard also has added veteran forward and Trinity Western University transfer 5’11” Rachel Leyenhorst from Dalmeny, Saskatchewan.
Complimenting the veterans are five rookies that will be vying for a starting spot. Kelsey Broersma, a standout guard from Abbotsford Christian School, and Gillian Duerksen from Carberry, Manitoba will be able to step in and play right away. The ‘Cats have also brought in defensive specialist Jenn Derksen (Winfield, BC) while Rachel Zoller (Trout Lake, WA) and Meggan Garate (Montrose, CO) bring the ‘Cats depth.
In 2004-05, the Bearcats played in a variety of exhibition games and tournaments against BCCAA and NCCAA teams.
