Good effort for 'Cats
Feb. 17, 2007
The women's basketball team finished their season with a close loss to the Malaspina Mariners 56-49.
Coming off a 67-49 loss on Friday, the 'Cats put together a better team effort
on Saturday.
"We came out hard today and battled with this team,"
commented head coach Amber Beauregard. "We were close but they were the better
team tonight."
The 'Cats and Mariners were tied at 28 at the half, but
the Mariners outscored their opponent 20-11 in the third quarter. First year
forward Chelsea Beaumont led the 'Cats 19 points and 5 rebounds.
CBC
finishes the year in last place in the league standings at 3-13. The Mariners
finish at 8-8 and will be competing at the provincial championships hosted by
Columbia March 1-3.
So Close
Feb. 3, 2007
The women's basketball team was eliminated from playoff contention after droppping two games to the Langara Falcons.
The 'Cats were defeated 53-41 on Friday, despite a 17-6 scoring run in the
fourth quarter. Alea Beaumont (2nd yr., Victoria) led the team with 14
points.
"We had a great start in the game but Langara's stifling zone
defence made it difficult for us to generate shots," commented head coach Amber
Beauregard.
CBC had a slow start to Saturday's game and trailed 31-19 at
the break. But the 'Cats started making their shots and clawed their way back
to take the lead with just over five minutes remaining. Langara responded and
tied the game and eventually took the lead 57-55, forcing CBC to foul the
Falcons. The Falcon player hit one of two shots, putting the 'Cats down by
three. On the next 'Cats possession, Cheslea Beaumont (1st yr., Victoria) was
fouled and made both free throws with a second remaining and that was as close
as they would get with the Falcons winning 59-58.
Julie Rempel led the
team with 11 points, while the Beaumont sisters combined for 20 points and 27
rebounds.
The 'Cats have a bye February 9-10 and will conclude their
season February 16-17 when they host Malaspina.
Knocking down another
Jan. 27, 2007
The women's basketball team earned a hard-earned split over the #4 nationally ranked UBC Okanagan Lakers.
CBC defeated the Lakers in the opening game of a double-header weekend
with a 70-62 win.
"We came out really hard against a smaller Lakers lineup who started four
guards", commented head coach Amber Beauregard. " Our defense was outstanding
and we had a lot of steals."
The 'Cats built a 22-10 lead early and went into halftime up 37-20. CBC
continued to dominate the boards, led by Alea Beaumont who finished with 16
boards; younger sister Chelsea had 10. With poise to hit their free throws late
in the game, the 'Cats upset the undefeated Lakers.
Julie Rempel led the way with 16 points while Lisa Bomhof had 14.
CBC gave the Lakers a run in the second game on Saturday and led at the
half. But the Lakers outscored CBC 31-12 in the third quarter and went on to
win 86-66. Chelsea Beaumont led the team with 15 points.
Last weekend the 'Cats split with the visiting Kwantlen Eagles. CBC will be
looking to improve their standing when they travel to Langara College February
2-3.
'Cats end skid
Jan. 20, 2007
The women's basketball team ended a six game losing skid with a 71-65 win over the visiting Kwantlen Eagles.
After Friday's 59-49 loss to the Eagles, the 'Cats rebounded with a solid
performance on their home court.
"We played a really great game,"
commented head coach Amber Beauregard. "Our defense was much improved (from
Friday's game) and we were able to hit our shots."
The teams were tied at
37 at the half but the 'Cats played a determined second half. The Beaumont
sisters dominated the boards and were unstoppable. Chelsea (1st yr., Victoria)
finished with a team high 15 points and 12 rebounds, while older sister Alea had
14 points and 11 rebounds. Candice Rempel also had 14 points. Guard Kelsey
Broersma (2nd yr., Abbotsford) had one of her best games of the year.
"I
challenged our team at the half to go get this win and they did."
The
'Cats (2-8) are tied for the sixth and final playoff spot. They host Okanagan
(8-0) January 26-27 at Columbia.
Big split
Nov. 18, 2006
The women's basketball team earned their first league win of the season after defeating Capilano College 59-56 on Friday.
It was a tough start on Friday as the Blues got off to an early 8-0 lead.
Instead of letting Capilano run away with it, CBC began their aggressive play
midway through the first quarter and played with the Blues for most of the
game. With CBC down by two with three minutes remaining when Julie Rempel (2nd
yr., Abbotsford) hit a three to give the 'Cats their first lead of the
game. CBC maintained their lead to finish the game by hitting all their shots
in the final minutes.
"This was a great win for us at home and out team captains (Rempel and Alea
Beaumont) stepped up to seal the win," commented head coach Amber Beauregard.
Rempel finished the night with 18 points and Beaumont had 12 points and 10
rebounds.
The Blues came out very strong in their game on Saturday to defeat CBC
90-64.
"We couldn't get any rythm or flow and our frustrations on offense turned
into bad defense," noted Beauregard, whose team drops to 1-5 in league play
going into the Christmas break.
Chelsea Beaumont (Victoria) was the leading scorer for CBC with 13
points.
In search of some offense
Nov. 11, 2006
The women's basketball team managed only to score 98 points in their
two losses against the Douglas College Royals November 10-11.
In Saturday's contest, the 'Cats started the game with a very dominating opening
half, but that's when things started to fall apart. "We dominated in every
aspect of the game," commented head coach Amber Beauregard, "but we completely
fell apart in the second half."
The 'Cats managed to score only 9 second half points.
"Our second half was not a good enough performance and we are going to have
to recommit to our team goals if we want to win some games."
Chelsea Beaumont (Victoria) led the team with 13 points, while Julie Rempel
chipped in with 11.
In Friday's game, the Royals converted on some costly turnovers by the 'Cats
to win 62-55.
"We turned the ball over way too many times and we were not aggressive enough
on offense."
Beaumont was the leading scorer with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Her older
sister, Alea, finished with 10 points.
The 'Cats will look to get things going when the host the Capilano College
Blues in their home opener November 17. Game time is 6:00 pm.
Full Court gives UNBC edge
Nov. 6, 2006
The UNBC Timberwolves used an effective full court press to defeat the visiting CBC women's basketball team.
In Friday's game the 'Cats came out with a solid first half effort. CBC managed
to handle the press of the Timberwolves well and created good offensive
opportunities in the paint. Julianne Threlfall (Abbotsford) was dominant in the
first half with eight points. The 'Cats came out flat in the second half and
struggled with the full court pressure. The Timberwolves took full advantage of
the turnovers and built a large lead going into the final quarter that they
would not relinquish to win 79-62.
Chelea Beaumont (1st yr. Victoria) led the team with 16 points and 12
rebounds. Her older sister, Alea Beaumont has 12 points and 12 rebounds.
"We tried to battle back but we couldn't find our grove," commented head
coach Amber Beauregard. "We gave a good effort but in the end our defense was
not good enough."
CBC had a great start on Saturday's and went up 8-0 to start the game. After
UNBC called a timeout it was all UNBC after that. Once again the 'Cats
struggled with the full court press and forced the team into several turnovers.
The Timberwolves went on to win 77-45.
Chelsea Beaumont led the team with 10 points.
"We could not get into our offensive game and our defense was not good enough
as we allowed 80 shots in the game and gave up 27 offensive rebounds," commented
Beauregard.
The 'Cats (0-2) travel to New Westminister November 10-11 to take on Douglas
College (0-1).
Basketball makes debut
Oct. 10, 2006
The women's basketball team competed at the Capilano College
exhibition tournament October 5-8 and made significant strides in their
play.
Despite a roster fresh with nine new faces, the 'Cats went into the tournament
looking for some much needed game experience.
CBC got off to a slow start
in their first game against Langara. Gillian Duerksen (Carberry, MB) led the
team with 13 points and 8 rebounds in a 62-46 loss.
"We looked like a
team who was playing in their first game," commented third-year head coach Amber
Beuregard.
The 'Cats had another slow start in their second game
against UNBC. CBC committed 21 turnovers in the first half and were down 39-16
at half-time. 6'1" post Chelsea Beaumont (Victoria) led the charge in the second
half and finished with a team high 10 points to close the gap to a 58-43
loss.
CBC finished on a winning note in their final game of the
tournament, downing the Douglas College Royals 53-34. Julie Rempel (2nd yr.,
Abbotsford) led the team with 15 points.
Next up for the 'Cats is the
Battle of Abbotsford, pitting the 'Cats against their cross-town rivals, the
UCFV Cascades on Thursday, October 19 at CBC. Game time is 6 pm.
