Final home games for Wiens
February 10, 2005

Fourth-year volleyball player Sharon Wiens will be playing in her final home games this weekend.  Wiens, a native of Edmonton, has had a successful four year career in the BCCAA where she has won numerous awards and accomplishments.

In her first season the team had a season record of 10-19.  Wiens finished the year leading her team in games played (77), passing efficiency (2.22), kills (186) and aces (56).  She continued her success in her second year even though the team only won a few games and finished with a 6-28 record.  Sharon was named a BCCAA 2nd Team All-Star and finished the year in 5th place in league kills (135).  She also set a team record on January 14, 2003 when she tallied 25 kills against UCFV.

In 2003-04 Wiens led her team in games played (96), passing efficiency (2.13), kills (198), digs (137), and aces (29).  Her efforts once again earned her a BCCAA 2nd Team All-Star award and a CCAA Academic All-Canadian.  She led her team to their best ever league record of 6-12 and a chance to compete in the Provincial Championships for the first time.

This season Sharon and the Bearcats are vying for another playoff spot and currently sit with a 7-8 league record with five games remaining.  She has once again stepped up her role and currently leads her team in kills (226), digs (204) and aces (34).  She has had a remarkable career as a Bearcat.

Wiens has had a remarkable journey and she will graduate as one of the preimier players to put on a Bearcats uniform. What's more significant then her volleyball skills is the leadership qualities that she brings to the team.

"Sharon is a great leader and has demonstrated that day-in and day-out", noted head coach Rocky Olfert.  "Every practice and every game Sharon brings a consistent work ethic that is hard to match. She has sincere desire to see the team succeed.  She has been a pleasure to coach and has contributed significantly the success of our program."

It's been an interesting path for Sharon.

"When I came to CBC my first year, I hadn't even planned on playing volleyball. But there was a team, so I joined it. That year was so fun that I decided to come back and play a second year. And now, well... here I am finishing my fourth year."

Wiens has been through it all as a player and will have many great memories to take with her.  She is looking to complete her Bachelors degree in Caregiving/Counselling and will eventually pursue a Master's degree.

"Even though we haven't won every game, I am happy to have had this opportunity. During my four years on the court there have been some unforgettable moments, I have learned a lot and met people who will be life long friends."

Wiens will be honoured prior to Friday's game against Malaspina U.C.  Game time is 6:30 pm.
