BCCAA All-Stars

Cheyla Reader of the women's volleyball team and Chad Friesen of the men's volleyball team were both awarded a BCCAA All-Star award for their play during the 2005-06 season.
Cheyla, a 2nd year power hitter from Comox BC, was selected as a 1st Team All-Star. As team captain, the 5’11” Reader has worked extremely hard and has become a premier player in many facets of her game. She has contributed significantly to the 'Cats program, offensively as one of the top hitters in the league and defensively, with uncanny athleticism and work ethic to dig balls.
Chad, a 1st year player from Abbotsford, is a high-flying outside hitter who has become one of the premier players in the BCCAA. He was awarded a 2nd Team All-Star award. Friesen finished 3rd in league kills and 5th in aces. His most notably performance was at the BCCAA Provincial quarter-finals when the #6 'Cats upset the #3 Capilano Blues 3-2. Friesen was unstoppable and had a career game that included 24 kills on 31 attempts. His efforts earned him a tournament all-star award.
#4 Royals take down #5 Bearcats in five sets

The Douglas College Royals relied on their experience late in the game and withstood the Bearcats surge, winning by scores 25-23, 25-22, 23-25, 15-25, 15-8.
The Royals advance to take on the #1 ranked Malaspina Mariners at 6:00 on Friday.
Cheyla Reader led the 'Cats with 15 kills and 19 digs. Kristine Schmidt and Mariel Anderson had 3 blocks apiece.
Royals Take 'Cats

The women's volleyball team has seen a lot of the Douglas College Royals lately and they will see more of them when they meet in the first round of the playoffs.
CBC travelled to New Westminister for a pair of games against the Royals this weekend to conclude the regular season.
The Royals won handily on Friday 3-0 by scores 25-15, 25-21, 25-16. The 'Cats committed 37 unforced errors in the contest and could not develop any rythm in their offense.
On Saturday CBC put up more of a fight but were defeated again 3-1 by scores 23-23, 26-24, 25-16, 25-14. The 'Cats showed a little more grit, but some inconsistencies in their play still hampered their ability to take down the experienced Royals team.
Cheyla Reader led the team with 9 kills while Kristine Schmidt had 4 stuff blocks. Bethany White had 17 digs.
The 5th ranked Bearcats will take on the 4th place Royals in the quarter-final playoffs on Thursday, February 23 at 6:30 pm at CBC. The winner will advance to the semi-finals against the #1 ranked Malaspina Mariners.
'Cats Sweep Avalanche

The women's volleyball team defeated the visiting College of the Rockies Avalanche (Cranbrook) in both games this weeekend.
In Friday's contest, CBC won 25-20, 25-14, 25-21. Melissa Hansma led the way with 10 kills, while Cheyla Reader and Bethany White had 7 kills. Kristine Schmidt led the team with 3 stuff blocks.
CBC continued to roll on Saturday and swept the match, 25-16, 25-21, 25-22. Team captain Cheyla Reader led the team with 11 kills, 3 aces and 12 digs. Bethany White had 4 aces.
With the two wins, the 'Cats improve their league record to 8-6 (5th place) and travel to Douglas College (9-5) for their final two league games of the season before hosting provincials February 23-25.
Bearcats Swept

The women's volleyball team lost a pair of games to the visiting Malaspina Mariners on the weekend.
In Friday's contest, the 'Cats made an abundance of unforced errors and lost 3-0, 25-18, 25-14, 25-16. Cheyla Reader and Kristine Schmidt led the team with 8 kills apiece.
On Saturday, CBC put up more of a fight but it still was not enough. The Mariners won 3-0, 25-17, 25-21, 25-21. Reader led the team with 7 kills, while Bethany White made 15 digs.
The 'Cats (6-6) have a bye February 3 and 4 before hosting College of the Rockies February 10 and 11.
A Battle Indeed

It took over 2 hours and five sets for the visiting UCFV Cascades to defeat CBC in women's volleyball action.
The 'Cats led 17-12 in the first set before the Cascades came back to tie the game at 22-22 and eventually take the set 25-23. CBC would jump out to a quick lead in the second set, a lead that they would not relinquish, and go on to win 25-18. In the third set, the 'Cats jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead before the Cascades came back to tie the game at 18-18. UCFV led 24-21, but some effective serving by Cheyla Reader allowed the 'Cats to eventually win the set 26-24. CBC took control of the fourth set from the start and built a comfortable 17-12 lead, but once again the Cascades showed their determination by fighting back to tie the game at 23-23. UCFV would take the next two points to force a fifth and deciding set. In the fifth, the Cascades continued to roll and led 7-5 before taking the set 15-13.
Reader led the team with 17 kills and 15 digs. 3rd year middle Kristine Schmidt had 13 kills, 5 stuff blocks and 6 aces.
CBC hosts the Malaspina Mariners January 27 and 28.
'Cats Stun Lakers

The women's volleyball team defeated the #3 nationally ranked Okanagan Lakers on Friday by winning in four sets.
Scores of the match were 25-19, 25-19, 19-25, 25-23. In the fourth set, the ‘Cats trailed 5-0 early but stormed back to tie the game at 11-11. Both teams would exchange the lead until the Bearcats jumped ahead 21-19 with some solid serving by Mariel Anderson. CBC played steady side-out ball to win 25-23.
Bethany White led the team with 10 kills and 10 digs, while Kristine Schmidt was solid in the middle with 9 kills and 5 stuff blocks. Setter Claire Van Meer moved the ball well and finished with 2 blocks and 9 digs.
On Saturday the Lakers (8-1) stormed back and proved why they are one of the top teams to contend with. They defeated the 'Cats (5-3) in straight sets by scores 25-16, 25-20, 25-17.
"I was really happy with our team effort on Friday, but today we just weren't as steady as we needed to be," commented head coach Rocky Olfert after the game on Saturday. "We hope to build off this weekend and get ready for UCFV."
The 'Cats host UCFV on Friday, January 20 at 6 pm.
Getting Back to Form

The women's volleyball team played 5 games in 2 days at an exhibition tournament in Kelowna this past weekend.
Columbia opened the tournament on Saturday with a 2-1 loss to Six Pack by scores 14-25, 28-26, 15-13. Kristine Schmidt led the way with 6 kills and 5 stuff blocks. In their next match the 'Cats lost 3-1 to Douglas College, 19-25, 25-19, 25-20, 25-17. Cheyla Reader led the way with 10 kills. CBC finished the day with a 3-1 win over Selkirk College, 25-22, 25-22, 22-25, 25-15. Schmidt led the way with 10 kills and 8 stuff blocks.
On Sunday the 'Cats lost 3-0 to the host the Okanagan by scores 25-20, 28-26, 25-20. Reader led the way with 8 kills and 12 kills. CBC concluded the tournament with a 2-1 loss to OUC Alumni, 17-25, 25-20, 15-12.
CBC hosts #3 nationally ranked Okanagan January 13 at 6 pm and January 14 at 1 pm to resume league play.
Two Road Wins

Prince George, BC -
The women's volleyball team improved their league record to 4-3 with two wins over the College of New Caledonia.
On Friday, November 25, the 'Cats defeated the Kodiaks 3-1 by scores 25-20, 19-25, 25-11, 25-18. Outside hitter Cheyla Reader had a team high 14 kills and added 5 blocks and 23 digs. Melissa Hansma and Kristine Schmidt has 12 kills apiece, with Schmidt adding 6 stuff blocks. Bethany White led the team with 26 digs.
On Saturday the 'Cats completed the sweep 3-0 in convicing fashion, 25-17, 25-16, 25-14. Reader led the team with 11 kills and 3 stuff blocks while Hansma contributed with 8 kills. White led the team again with 20 digs.
The Bearcats go into the Christmas break sitting in fourth place, and resume league play against the undefeated Okangan Lakers January 13 and 14 at CBC.
Bearcat Blues

The CBC women's volleyball team lost both games to the visiting Capilano Blues this weekend.
On Friday the 'Cats won the first two sets 25-22, 25-20 before the #7 nationally ranked Blues came back to win the next three sets 25-22, 25-22, 15-11. Melissa Hansma led the way for the 'Cats with 20 kills, while Cheyla Reader had 19 kills and 5 stuff blocks. Kristine Schmidt and Katie Dykshoorn each had 6 stuff blocks. Libero Bethany White led the team with 28 digs.
On Saturday the 'Cats (2-3) had trouble finding any type of rhythm and were swept 3-0 by scores 25-18, 25-16, 25-12.
"We didn't play as a team tonight, and we play as individuals this is the kind of result that is going to happen," noted head coach Rocky Olfert.
The 'Cats embark on a road trip to Prince George to face-off against the College of New Caledonia Kodiaks November 25 and 26.
Efficient Work
November 14, 2005
The women's volleyball team travelled to Victoria this weekend and won both games against Camosun College.
In the opening game, the 'Cats defeated the Chargers 3-0 (25-14, 25-11, 25-16). CBC dominated the net with a kill efficiency of 70%, compared to the Chargers -1%. The team was led by team captain Cheyla Reader with 13 kills while Melissa Hansma was solid on the outside, racking up 7 kills on 8 attempts with a 75% kill efficiency.
The 'Cats (2-1) continued where the left off and defeated the Chargers on Saturday 3-0 (25-15, 25-18, 25-13). With a more balance attack, setter Claire Van Meer spread the offense around. Reader led the team with 11 kills, while Hansma had 7. Middle Katie Dykshoorn and Kristine Schmidt each had 3 stuff blocks, with 6'2" Mariel Anderson had 4 aces.
This weekend the Bearcats host the undefeated Capilano College Blues.
Bearcats Fall

The CBC women's volleyball team was downed 3-0 by UCFV in the opening game of the 2005-06 league season.
Scores of the match were 26-24, 25-23, 25-16 in favor of the Cascades.
In the opening set the 'Cats got off to a rough start but battled back from a 8-point deficit to tie the game at 22-22. Both teams would exchange points until a couple unforced errors by Columbia allowed the Cascades to take the opening set 26-24.
In the second set, the 'Cats continued to build on their momentum and opened with a commanding 12-1 lead. This time the Cascades battled back to tie the game at 22-22 before going on a run of their own to win 25-23.
The Cascades controlled the third set with some key serving by Delayne Peters (Abbotsford).
Cheyla Reader (2nd yr. Comox, BC) led the 'Cats with 13 kills.
"We just didn't make the plays when we needed too," commented head coach Rocky Olfert. "We showed some good things tonight, but overall we need to be much more steady and ready to play."
Next weekend the 'Cats are off to Victoria to take on the Camosun Chargers.
Women's Volleyball Preview

The women's volleyball team is looking to build upon their season from last year.
With a 10-10 league record in 2004-05, the 'Cats are looking to take another stride to the top.
With a core of returning players, including setter Claire Van Meer (W.J. Mouat), 6’1” middle Kristine Schmidt (MEI), 6’2” outside hitter Mariel Anderson (High Road Academy) and CCAA Academic All-Canadian, 5’11” outside hitter and team captain Cheyla Reader (Comox, BC), the ‘Cats are eager to get started with league play.
Surrounding this nucleus is the return of 6’2 middle Katie Dykshoorn (Abby Christian), who played for the ‘Cats in 2003-04. Power hitters Bethany White (Kelowna) and Melissa Hansma (Abby Christian) bring depth to the outside, while libero Rebecca Sawatzky (Grande Prairie) and utility player Shanine Elzina (Unity Christian) round out the roster.
Head coach Rocky Olfert begins his 5th year.
Grant MacEwan Tournament

The CBC women's volleyball team started slow but finished strong at the Grant MacEwan tournament this past weekend.
The 'Cats started the tournament with a 3-0 loss (25-23, 25-21, 25-19) to Grant MacEwan alumni. In the following game the 'Cats were bounced 3-1 by Grande Prairie (25-20, 25-18, 21-25, 25-16) and then lost 3-0 to Kings' University College (25-18, 25-20, 29-27).
The Bearcats found some momentum when they defeated Grant MacEwan alumni 3-1 (22-25, 25-14, 25-19, 25-20). Kristine Schmidt led her team with 9 kills, 1 block and 3 aces.
Columbia closed out the tournament with a 3-1 win (25-23, 19-25, 25-14, 25-6) over NAIT. Cheyla Reader led the team with 11 kills while Mariel Anderson had 10 kills, 1 block and 7 aces.
Unforced Errors Costly
September 23, 2005
The women's volleyball team lost 3-1 to the visiting Multnomah Ambassadors by scores 26-24, 19-25, 25-17, 25-21 in exhibition play.
The 'Cats were unable to get any momentum going throughout the match, hurting themselves with costly unforced errors. The Bearcats had 10 missed serves compiled with 20 hitting errors. Mariel Anderson led the attack with 12 kills while Kristine Schmidt was solid in the middle with 10 kills and 6 stuff blocks.
The Bearcats resume play at the Whatcom Community College tournament September 30 and October 1.
