#3 Mariners Hold Court
Feb. 17, 2007
The women's volleyball team was swept 3-0 in both matches in Nanaimo
this weekend by the #3 nationally ranked Malaspina Mariners.
The Mariners defeated the 'Cats 3-0 on Friday by scores 25-11, 25-18, 25-20.
Kara Jansen Van Doorn (1st yr., Langley) led the team with 8 kills.
The
Mariners duplicated their performance on Saturday, winning in straight sets
25-23, 25-7, 25-16. Jansen Van Doorn was the leader again with 13 kills while
Mariel Anderson (3rd yr., Chilliwack) was selected player of the game for CBC.
Katelyn Giesbrecht (1st yr., Ontario) had 3 aces.
The loss concludes the
season for CBC who miss the playoffs by two points with a 4-12 league record.
The 'Cats were aiming to get back the Provincial Championships after qualifying
last year with a 8-8 record.
The Championships take place February 22-24
at UBC Okanagan in Kelowna.
Cascades Sweep Battle
Feb. 10, 2007
The CBC volleyball teams fell to cross-town rival UCFV in straight sets on Friday night.
WVB: Bearcats tripped by Cascades
The first set was a back and forth
contest as both teams traded points but the Cascades came away with the 25-21
set win. The Cascades kept the pressure on and won the remaining two sets easily
25-19 and 25-14 to win the match 3-0.
“We had a shaky start but we stuck to our game plan and we kept the pressure
on,” said head coach Bob Yuen as he was very pleased with his team’s efforts
tonight.
Delayne Peters (3rd, Abbotsford) returned from injury tonight and proved to
be an immediate impact and she notched the Player of the game and led Fraser
Valley with 15 kills. On the defensive end of things, the Cascades Stacey Chomos
(2nd, Coquitlam) and Carrolyn Jennings (3rd, Maple Ridge) each had nine and
eight digs respectively.
For the 'Cats, outside hitter Kara Jansen Van
Doorn led her team with 9 kills and 2 stuff blocks.
"We played some of
our best ball in the first couple sets and got stuck in a couple rotations in
the third that cost us," commented head coach Rocky Olfert. "UCFV made the big
plays at key moments, but overall I'm proud of how far our team has come in the
last few weeks."
The Cascades improved their chances of making the playoffs and it will all
come down to how they do in the final two matches of the season next weekend
when they head to Camosun to take on the Chargers. Friday’s match will take
place at 6:30pm and Saturday contest will get underway at 2:00pm. The Bearcats
conclude the regular season against #1 ranked Malaspina Mariners in Nanaimo.
MVB: Cascades dominant from start to finish in win over CBC
It took exactly one hour for the Fraser Valley Cascades to make quick work of
the CBC Bearcats. The Cascades took the Battle of Abbotsford winning 3-0 in
front of a packed house at the Student Activity Centre on Friday night.
A very entertaining first set between the arch rivals but the Cascades
eventually took control and won the set 25-22. The remaining two sets were a
breeze as the Cascades won the second set 25-15 and the remaining set only
taking 15 minutes to complete with the Cascades winning 25-13 and the match
3-0.
A depleted CBC head coach Tim Demant said after the match that “Their
experience showed tonight and ours didn’t.”
Derek Fletcher (3rd, Langley) continued to be a leader as he had 13 kills and
three aces. Many of Fletcher’s kills were of the highlight reel type as the ball
was crushed as it smacked the gym floor and the crowd erupted as so did his
teammates. One of the graduating seniors, Setter Marco Russo (4th, Winfield) was
strong on the defensive end with nine digs while the rookie Nathan Toews
(Abbotsford) led the team with 11 digs. The other graduating seniors did well in
their final matches on home court as Carl Nienhuis (4th, Abbotsford) and Joel
Krueger (4th, Chilliwack) combined for 23 points of total offense.

'Cats getting ready for Battle
Feb. 6, 2007
More than city-wide bragging rights are at stake when the Fraser
Valley Cascades meet up with Columbia Bible Bearcats Friday, February 9
at UCFV.
A play-off spot is up for grabs in this year's second installment of the "Battle
of Abbotsford".
Fraser Valley hosts Columbia Friday, February 9 at the Student Activity
Centre, in the final home game of the 2006-07 season. The women's game gets
underway at 6 p.m., followed by the men's match-up at 7:45 p.m.
The Cascades men's team (6-7 BCCAA) currently sits a game up on CBC (5-8
BCCAA) for the sixth and final playoff spot with just three games remaining on
the schedule. The Cascades officially wrap-up the regular season next weekend at
Camosun. Since Fraser Valley joined the BCCAA in the 2004-05 season they have
never made the playoffs, nor have they suffered a loss at the hands of the
Bearcats. In this year's earlier installment of the Battle of Abbotsford the
Cascades handed CBC a 3-0 homecourt loss in late November.
Friday's match-up also marks the last home game of the season for the
Cascades, also meaning final hurrah for a trio of Fraser Valley seniors. Setter
Marco Russo (Winfield), middle-back Carl Nienhuis (Abbotsford), and Joel Krueger
(Chilliwack) will all play in front of the home crowd for the last time, and are
keen on going out winners. For BCCAA All-Academic Krueger, he will be facing the
team in which he got his start. The current league leader in stuff-blocks played
his rookie season at CBC in 2003-04, with January 30th of that season being the
last time CBC defeated Fraser Valley.
Fraser Valley's women's squad (4-9 BCCAA) is currently locked in a three-way
tie with Columbia Bible (4-9 BCCAA) and Camosun (4-8 BCCAA) for two of three
available playoff spots. CBC shocked the Cascades with a 3-0 sweep in their
earlier meeting this season to send the Cascades into a tailspin. Since falling
to CBC in late November, Fraser Valley has dropped six of their eight conference
games and will need to snap out of their funk if they hope to make it two
straight seasons with trips to the Provincials.
Tickets are available at
the door of the Student Activity Centre. Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for
seniors/students/children.

A split with the Avalanche
Jan. 20, 2007
The women's volleyball team bounced back from a 3-1 loss on Friday
to win 3-2 on Saturday against the College of the Rockies
Avalanche.
After Friday's loss (25-21, 25-19, 15-25, 25-20) the 'Cats put together their
best performance since the Christmas break to win a marathon match by scores
21-25, 26-24, 22-25, 26-24, 17-15. The win puts the 'Cats into a tie for the
fifth place at 4-7.
CBC trailed 21-18 and 23-21 in the fourth set before
some effective serving by Mariel Anderson (3rd yr., Chilliwack) brought the
'Cats back to tie the game at 23. The 'Cats would withstand match point and
eventually take the set 26-24. In the fifth, CBC went up 8-4 before the
Avalanche came back to within one at 8-7. Columbia could not put the Avalanche
away at 14-13, losing the next two points to give the Avalanche match point. A
kill by Laura Martens tied the game again. CBC won the next two points with the
effective serving of Kara Jansen Van Doorn to close out the
match.
Jansen Van Doorn finished with 17 kills and 3 stuff blocks.
Anderson had 9 kills and 4 aces, while newcomer Katelyn Giesebrecht had 5 kills,
3 blocks and 3 aces.
The 'Cats travel to Kelowna to take on the
undefeated Okanagan Lakers January 26 -27.
Chargers Sweep WVB
Jan. 14, 2007
The visiting Camosun College Chargers used their steady play to defeat the women's volleyball team this weekend.
The 'Cats were defeated 3-1 on Friday by scores 25-21, 7-25, 26-24, 25-18. Kara
Jansen Van Doorn led the team with 13 kills and 2 stuff blocks. The Chargers
kept up their play on Saturday and took advantage of too many unforced errors by
CBC to win in straight sets, 25-22, 25-20, 25-15.
The losses drop the 'Cats to 3-6 in league play.
CBC will take on College of the Rockies in Cranbrook January 19 & 20.
Back into it
Jan. 11, 2007
Volleyball action resumes this weekend as the 'Cats host the Camosun Chargers.
After
a seven week layoff, the Bearcats are back in action to resume the second half
of the BCCAA schedule. Friday, November
24 was the last time the ‘Cats took the court for a Conference game and it
pitted them against cross-town rival UCFV. The CBC women came out on top 3-0, while the
men lost 0-3. Now
into the New Year and a lengthy break, it’s time to carry on what was started
last year.
The
Chargers women enter the weekend on a two-game winning streak after defeating
the CNC Kodiaks November 24 & 25. They are led by 4th year captain
Dana Allen, who had a solid weekend against the Kodiaks that earned her Athlete
of the Week honors. On the men’s side,
the #12 nationally ranked Chargers were busy over the holidays competing at the
Mount Royal Classic in Calgary and came away with a 3-2 record that
included two wins over Grant MacEwan and a win over Briercrest.
The
CBC men’s team was also in action over the Christmas break and took their game
south of the border for two exhibition games in Southern
California. Competing at
Hope
International University, the ‘Cats played Thompson
Rivers University (CIS) and lost 3-1, 30-27,
29-31, 30-19, 30-25. CBC concluded the
trip against Hope International (NCCAA) and lost 3-1, 30-26, 29-31, 30-27,
30-21.
Game times go at 6 pm & 7:45 on Friday and 1 & 2:45 on
Saturday. Next weekend the 'Cats are off to Cranbrook to take on the College of
the Rockies.
'Cats down Cascades
Nov. 24, 2006
The women's volleyball swept the visiting University College of the Fraser Valley Cascades 3-0 on Friday.
CBC won by scores 26-24, 25-22, 26-24.
The first set was evenly played but the 'Cats pulled through on a kill by
outside hitter Catrina Cazemier (1st yr. Vauxhall, AB). The Cascades (2-3) took
a commanding 8-1 lead in the second set, but some effective serving by Laura
Martens (1st yr. Surrey) brought the Columbia back to tie the game at 8. The
Cascades called timeout after CBC went ahead 14-12, but that didn't stop the
momentum as the 'Cats maintained their lead to win 25-22. In the third set, CBC
trailed throughout until the late going. Down 20-16, they put together a run of
points when the Cascades called a timeout leading 21-20. It went down to the
wire, but the effective serving of Shanine Elzinga (2nd yr., Chilliwack) and
steady defensive play of CBC that allowed the 'Cats to close out the match
27-25.
Kara Jansen Van Doorn (1st yr., Langley) was the leading scorer with 18
kills, 2 stuff blocks and 17 digs. Cazemier was also efficient on the outside
with 14 kills, while Ashley Jansen came through in the middle with 5 kills.
This concludes league play for the 'Cats for the Christmas break. Play
resumes in January 2007.

(Langley) who tallied 14 kills on 36 attempts and 1 stuff block. Catrina
Cazmier (Vauxhall, AB) tallied 10 kills 28 attempts.
"We once again showed signs of playing really well, but a few lapses each set
have been the difference," commented head coach Rocky Olfert. Case in point,
CBC committed 13 serving errors.
In the third set CBC led 9-5 and 16-14 before the Royals scored seven
straight points to take a 21-14 lead. "It's those type of runs where we need to
be more focused and steady."

25-18, 25-17.
Next up for the 'Cats is the Capilano College Blues November 17-18 in North

big difference from yesterday's match," commented head coach Rocky Olfert.
The 'Cats host the Douglas College Royals November 10-11 at the 'Place. Game
times are 6:00 and 7:45 pm.
It starts now!
Nov. 3, 2006
A new season is underway for the CBC volleyball teams
as they welcome the College of New Caledonia Kodiaks to the ‘Place for
a pair of matches this weekend to kick-off league play.
Along with a new season comes new changes and this year is no
different.
The CBC women’s team welcomes seven new members to the team.
Shanine Elzinga (Chilliwack) is the only returning player from 2005-06. Known
as an outside hitter, Shanine has stepped into the middle position this year
along with transfer Ashley Jansen (Surrey). Kara Jansen Van Doorn (Langley),
Catrina Cazmier (Vauxhall, AB), Ashley Hau (Lac La Biche) and Laura Martens
(Surrey) will provide the offense on the outside while Sheena Daley (Chilliwack)
quarterbacks the offense as the starting setter. Jodi Schmidt (Elm Creek, MB)
will use your quickness as the defensive specialist.
The Bearcats
competed in two preseason exhibition tournaments. They were at the Grant
MacEwan tournament in Edmonton October 6-8 and hosted the Columbia Classic
October 27-28.
The men’s volleyball team is slightly revamped this year
as well. The ‘Cats welcome back five second year players from last year’s squad
including libero David Dreger (Edmonton), Dale Teigrob (Port Rowan, ON), 6’5”
middle blocker Kit Willams (Abbotsford) and high-flying outside hitter Chad
Friesen (Abbotsford). All four players were members of the 2005-06 team that
lost in the BCCAA bronze medal game.

return to the ‘Cats after a one year absence. Wong, who will use his
athleticism as the starting setter, was a member of the team back on 2004-05.
New to the team is the hard-hitting outside hitter Ryan Ewald (Houston, BC)
whose brother Joel played for the ‘Cats from 2004-06. He’s accompanied by
fellow hard hitters, Aaron Lyut (Chatham, ON) and Travis Priebe
(Abbotsford).

'Cats take Wolves in 5
Oct. 14, 2006
The women's volleyball team defeated the visiting Walla Walla Wolves 3-2 on Saturday in exhibition play.
The 'Cats took the first two sets 25-21, 25-18 before losing the next two 17-25,
21-25. CBC prevailed in the fifth set by winning 16-14.
Kara Jansen Van Doorn (1st yr., Langley) led the team with 14 kills, while
Catrina Cazmier (1st yr., Vauxhall, AB), Ashley Jansen (2nd yr., Surrey), and
Shanine Elzinga (2nd yr., Chilliwack) all had 3 stuff blocks.
WVB Competitive at MacEwan
Oct. 10, 2006
The women's volleyball team played 5 games at the Grant MacEwan volleyball tournament October 6-8.
CBC opened the tournament with a tough 3-2 loss to Medicine Hat College. Scores
of the game were 25-19, 24-26, 19-25, 28-26, 15-8. Outside hitter Kara Jansen
Van Doorn (1st yr., Langley) led the team with 25 kills and 2 stuff blocks.
Next up was last year's Alberta provincial champion, the Grant MacEwan
Griffins. The 'Cats battled in each set but lost 3-1 by scores 25-20, 25-22,
22-25, 25-17. Van Doorn led the team again with 14 kills. CBC matched up well
against NAIT in their third contest, but one too many unforced errors was the
difference in this game as NAIT went on to win 23-25, 25-21,25-20, 25-19.
Playing in their third game of the day, the 'Cats were up against Red
River College, a strong and experienced team from Winnipeg. Red River won
25-15, 25-20, 19-25, 29-27. Shanine Elzinga (2nd yr., Chilliwack), had a strong
game in the middle with 7 kills.
The 'Cats closed out the tournament
with a 3-0 win over Lakeland College 25-21, 25-13, 25-20. Catrina Cazmier (1st
yr., Vauxhall, AB) had a solid game with 8 kills.
"Overall, we competed
well but our inexperience showed at critical times," commented head coach Rocky
Olfert. The team of eight consists of six new starters from last year's squad,
including six first year players. "We are process oriented and not too
concerned with wins right now. We just need to keep improving."
The women's volleyball team played 5 games at the Grant MacEwan volleyball tournament October 6-8.
'Cats and Orcas battle to Five
Sept. 14, 2005
The women's volleyball team made their exhibition season debut in
Bellingham, WA last night osing a five set decision to the Whatcom
College Orcas.
Despite seven new faces and only one returning player, the 'Cats didn't back
down from the Orcas, who prevailed in a match that took just over two hours,
30-14, 22-30, 30-17, 28-30, 15-1.
6'1" rookie outside hitter Kara Jansen
VanDoorn paced the 'Cats with 23 points (19 kills, 3 stuff blocks, 1 ace) and 20
digs. Newcomers Catrina Cazemier had 9 kills and 2 aces while Ashley Jansen
chipped in with 2 aces and 17 digs.
"Overall, I thought we had a good
team effort tonight. We saw some really good things happening on the court,
especially considering we've only had a couple practices this year. But there
are also many things that we need to work on and we'll use these next few weeks
to better ourselves," commented head coach Rocky Olfert.
Next up for
the 'Cats is their annual alumni game on September 23. They travel to scrimmage
at Capilano College on October 3 and will be in Edmonton October 6-8 for the
Grant MacEwan College exhibition tournament.

Power on the Outside
June 29, 2006
Kara Jansen Van Doorn, a 6'1" all-star power hitter from Langley
Christian, has signed on with the women's volleyball team.
Kara comes to the 'Cats with a wealth of volleyball experience. She
led her high school team, Langley Christian, to a Provincial "A" title in 2006
and collected a wide array of accolades along the way. She was selected as a
provincial 1st team all-star in 2005 and 2006 and was named MVP for the Fraser
Valley's the last two years. Kara, who's older sister Dayna plays at Trinity
Western University and most recently with Team Canada, has also had a successful
club volleyball career.
As part of the Fraser Valley Volleyball Club Blitz, her team won the BC
provincials the past two years and finished third at the national
championships in 2005 and 2006. Kara has also taken her talent onto the sand
and won the Beach Volleyball Provincials last year.
"We are thrilled to have Kara join our program," commented head coach Rocky
Olfert. "Kara has played at a very high level and she will be called upon to
carry much of the offense for our young team."
Cazemier signs with 'Cats

Cazemier, who comes to Columbia from Vauxhall, Alberta, is a multi-sport athlete

brings a long list of awards and accomplishments. At Vauxhall High School,
Catrina was selected Most Valuable Player for basketball and softball and
received the Senior Athlete of the Year award in 2005 and 2006. In 2005 she
led her high school volleyball team to a 2A Provincial Championship.

was also a member of Lethbridge Volleyball Club the past five years where she
has competed at Provincial and National Championships, most notably at the
recent 18 & Under National Volleyball Championships in Abbotsford. Catrina
also excels in the classroom and graduated with honors.
"Catrina passes
very well, serves tough and digs heavy balls. She is extremely coachable and I
have no doubt she will excel at the college level because she has all the
skills," noted her high school coach, Scott Reiling.
Head coach Rocky
Olfert is very pleased to add Catrina to the Bearcats program.
"Catrina
is very gifted athlete and I'm excited to add her to our program. Her
commitment, competitiveness and drive to succeed will be a huge asset to our
team."
Daley commits to 'Cats
May 15, 2006
Setter Sheena Daley has signed a letter of intent to play for the women's volleyball team for the 2006-07 season.
Daley, from Chilliwack BC, played her high school ball at Highroad Academy.
She has a wealth of experience in the five years she has been playing, including
a couple stints with the BC Provincial team. In 2004 she was named a first team
provincial and Fraser Valley All-Star. In 2003 she led Team BC to a gold medal
at the Western Elites and was also named tournament MVP.
She has also rounded out her skills on the sand, winning a gold at the 2003
16 & under Beach Volleyball Provincial Championships.
Daley took a year off from volleyball this past season but head coach Rocky
Olfert believes this won't stop her from excelling in the BCCAA.
"We are very excited to get a player of her calibre, competitiveness and
experience. Sheena works extremely hard at her game and she will be the
cornerstone of our team this season."
