Library Research Guides for Courses
See the following Library Research Guides for individual courses.
The law requires that public performance rights be secured in advance of showing any video to a class or group. Most feature films are covered by our institutional public performance licences. Copyright clearance is mandatory for the duplication or transfer of sound recordings, films, videos, and software.
The College has signed licences with two companies, Criterion Pictures and Audo Cine that control about 80% of feature films in Canada. These licences convert "home use" videos that you rent or buy - whether from the video store, public library, or personal collections to "public performance use". For example, you may show original feature videos in class, the library, or common rooms accessible to the dormitory population.
It is your responsbility to:
- Ensure that videos and films are covered by our institutional public performance licences. To verify if films are covered, contact Anne Andres, Associate Librarian at anne.andres@columbiabc.edu or phone 604-853-3567 ext. 334
Recommending books and other materials for the Library
The Library welcomes suggestions and recommendations from faculty and sessional faculty for titles to be added to the collection, particularly when materials support and update the currency of courses. Please ensure that the library holds all "Recommended Course Readings" (except course textbooks) listed in course syllabi. The Library Director and Associate Librarian also liaise with program heads for title recommendations. Numerous publisher catalogues are regularly routed to faculty for suggestions and recommendations. Faculty are also consulted when specific areas of the collection are being enhanced or if weeding is planned for a specific area of the collection. Email Richard Thiessen or Anne Andres with your suggestions and recommendations. Faculty members interested in viewing recent library acquisitions can go to the What's New page.
