What is Praxis?

Praxis is a unique stream within the Columbia ONE program with an emphasis on the integration of faith and culture. Praxis is for students who want to deepen their faith as they passionately live out God's love for people in the world around them. Students build on a biblical foundation for faith and life in North American culture, addressing topics ranging from social justice, the arts, faith in the workplace, and urban church ministry. Classroom learning is combined with practical experience and intentional community as students have the opportunity to explore places like Vancouver and New York City. While there, they are exposed to the heart of these cities and discover how their faith can be lived out in our current culture. Praxis students have a heart for engaging culture and seeking faithfulness to God wherever they go.

Socially Aware

Socially Aware

Praxis students will examine the various social issues facing North American culture and explore what it means to respond as a Christian. In addition to volunteering in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, students are introduced to different organizations and groups who are actively involved in finding positive solutions to current cultural issues.

Culturally Engaged

Culturally Engaged

What does it mean to be a Christian and engage in culture? Visiting various cities, Praxis engages students in North American culture in a variety of ways. Exploring everything from pop icons to indie bands, Broadway to local theatre, the super-rich to the destitute and poor, Praxis takes students on an engaging journey that explores what Christian faithfulness looks like in today’s culture.

Artistically Minded

Artistically Minded

Artists thrive in places where people come together with the common purpose to create and enjoy art. Throughout the year, Praxis students have the opportunity to engage in a number of artistic outlets such as theatre and music as well as get involved in the arts community on campus.

Experiential Learning

A key part of Praxis is experiential learning. In addition to studying alongside other first-year students, Praxis students have the opportunity to participate in several areas of cultural engagement as a group. This includes a specific course on the topic of Christianity and Culture that incorporates classroom learning and visits with key people and places in North American culture. Along with exploring and learning about aspects of Vancouver culture, students have the opportunity to go on a 1-week trip to New York City. The combination of hands-on experience, in-class learning and community building create an experience that is sure to be transformational.
