What is Praxis?

Praxis is a unique 8-month discipleship program with an emphasis on faith and mission in the urban context. The program is for students who want to deepen their faith as they passionately live out God's love for people. Students build on a biblical foundation for faith and life in urban culture, addressing topics ranging from social justice, the arts, faith in the marketplace, and urban church ministry. Classroom learning is combined with practical experience and intentional community as the group explores some of the largest cities in North America. While there, they are exposed to the heart of the city and discover how their faith can be lived out in our current culture. Praxis students have a heart for the city and want to make a lasting impact wherever they go.

PRAXIS: [prax-sis] the process by which theory is enacted, practiced, embodied, or realized.

Socially Aware

Socially Aware

Praxis students will examine the various social issues facing urban centers and explore what it means to respond as a Christian. In addition to volunteering in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, students are introduced to different organizations and groups who are actively involved in finding positive solutions to the issues present in major cities like New York, Seattle and Victoria.

Culturally Engaged

Culturally Engaged

What does it mean to be a Christian and engage in culture? Praxis immerses students in the epicenter of culture - cities. Exploring everything from pop icons to indie bands, Broadway to local theatre, the super rich to the destitute and poor, Praxis takes students on an engaging journey that explores how Christian community looks in today's urban areas.

Artistically Minded

Artistically Minded

Artists thrive in cities where people come together with the common purpose to create and enjoy art. Throughout the year, Praxis students have the opportunity to participate in a number of artistic outlets including theatre, concerts, and open mics as well as getting involved in the arts community on campus.

Praxis: Exploring Urban Culture

New York City is arguably the epicenter for shaping current culture. Praxis includes a 10-day trip to New York city where students explore the Big Apple and everything this world city has to offer. While in Manhattan, students partner with various inner-city organizations and discover how they can make a difference in shaping culture. Watch how Praxis students experience the program and hear how their experiences have had a lasting impact on their lives.

Experiential Learning

The foundation for Praxis is applied learning. In addition to studying alongside other first-year students, Praxis students take unique courses that include both theoretical and practical elements. For 8 months, students engage in academic classes, which serve as the base for further study in faith, culture, and urban ministry and earn them a full semester of transferable credit to other post-secondary institutions (see Transfer Guides for more information). Courses also include learning experiences such as guest speakers, a fall retreat, one-on-one mentoring, team building and peer discipleship groups. The combination of hands-on experience, in-class learning and community building create a program that is sure to be transformational.
